Résumé: L'élaboration de la notion de dissociation dans les premiers écrits de Pierre Janet ne peut être comprise qu'en rappelant sa double identité de professeur de philosophie, neveu d'un philosophe spiritualiste célèbre, Paul Janet, et de futur médecin dont les maotres sont Charcot et le philosophe fondateur de la psychologie pathologique française, Théodule Ribot.Car, entre 1885 et 1888, les premiers travaux de Pierre Janet sur les doubles personnalités le situent au c˦ur d'une controverse philosophique dont les enjeux centraux sont la notion d'unité du Moi chère aux spiritualistes et radicalement contestée par les défenseurs d'une psychologie scientifique, comme Taine et Ribot, ainsi que le statut de l'inconscient : physiologique, psychologique ou, dans la continuité du magnétisme animal, paranormal.À propos des phénomènes de personnalités alternantes présentés par ses deux sujets d'expériences, Léonie et Lucie, nous voyons Janet osciller entre une interprétation impliquant l'existence d'une personnalité inconsciente et la formulation, qui sera fixée en 1889 dans L'Automatisme psychologique, d'une ≪loi de dissociation≫ de la conscience propre aux hystériques. Nous montrons que, en fait, ces premières expériences servent à confirmer un réquisit psychophilosophique. Pierre Janet propose en effet une psychologie de la conscience reposant sur la notion de subconscient, qui préserve l'idée d'une unité normale du Moi et qui n'est pas, par conséquent, incompatible avec le spiritualisme dominant dans la philosophie académique.

Summary: The development of the idea of dissociation in the early writings of Pierre Janet can only be understood by recalling the dual identity of this professor of philosophy, nephew of a famous spiritualistic philosopher, Paul Janet, and future doctor, whose teachers were Charcot and the philosopher-founder of French pathological psychology, Théodule Ribot.Written between 1885 and 1888, Pierre Janet's first works on multiple personalities place him in the center of a philosophical controversy, where the main stakes were the idea of the unity of the self, dear to spiritualists and hotly disputed by the defenders of scientific psychology, such as Taine and Ribot, as well as the status of the unconscious: physiological, psychological or, continuing along animal magnetism lines, paranormal.Concerning alternate personality phenomena presented by his two experimental subjects, Léonie and Lucie, Janet swings between an interpretation involving the existence of an unconscious personality, and the the formulation, which would be fixed in 1889 in Psychologic automatism, of a ‘law of dissociation’ of the conscienceness characteristic of hysterics. We show that in fact, these early experiments served to confirm a psycho-philosophical requisite. Pierre Janet provided a psychology of the consciousness that is based on the idea of the subconscience, preserving the idea of the normal unity of the self, and which is not. consequently, incompatible with the spiritualism dominant in academic philosophy.
