Abstract
Summary: Following a compilation from the literature of the observation of cataleptic phenomena in children, six cases seen at the Harriet Lane Home are reported. In all patients, ranging in age from sixteen months to nine years, the catalepsy was closely associated with some infectious or toxic disease (otitis media, measles, mumps, typhoid fever, lead encephalitis, rheumatic heart disease, and chronic dysentery). In one instance, the catalepsy followed febrile convulsions; in another it was coincidental with angioneurotic edema; and in a third definite hysterical features were present. Four of the patients were mentally retarded. In all cases, the catalepsy was part of a dysergastic reaction, that is, of those psychopathologic changes which are apt to occur in the course of infectious and toxic diseases.
