Abstract

Re-attributions of Delacroix drawings in recent decades have introduced an important question bridging connoisseurship and ethics: how to explain the presence of the Delacroix estate stamp on numerous non-Delacroix drawings. This paper reopens discussion about stamp chronology and responsibility, a reassessment prompted by current knowledge of a false stamp used in the nineteenth century and found on both Delacroix and non-Delacroix works. The first part redefines the issues on the basis of the faux cachet, while the second considers implications of the false stamp for the history and status of Delacroix drawings by reevaluating arguments identifying Delacroix's assistant Pierre Andrieu as the responsible party.

<abstract>
<p>Re-attributions of Delacroix drawings in recent decades have introduced an important question bridging connoisseurship and ethics: how to explain the presence of the Delacroix estate stamp on numerous non-Delacroix drawings. This paper reopens discussion about stamp chronology and responsibility, a reassessment prompted by current knowledge of a false stamp used in the nineteenth century and found on both Delacroix and non-Delacroix works. The first part redefines the issues on the basis of the faux cachet, while the second considers implications of the false stamp for the history and status of Delacroix drawings by reevaluating arguments identifying Delacroix's assistant Pierre Andrieu as the responsible party.</p>

<abstract>
