In his attempt to summarise the work of Freud and his followers, Fromm comments "What is required is to contribute to the understanding of Freud." Later chapters provide a useful summary, in dynamic jargon, of character traits, from the psychoanalytical viewpoint. He presents Ego Psychology as a drastic revision of Freud's system. I found these parts easy to read, and to integrate with previous reading. I would commend this to all students of mental health, psychology and social science. The second section covered, as far as I was concerned, a new area :- "Marx' contribution to Psychology". This alone was sufficient reward for reading the book. The third section refers to Social Psychology, and ranging far and wide, through Catholicism, Protestantism, matriarchal and patriarchal, and Romantic models of society, attempts to provide an integrated view of modern man. The book is easy to read, but I made a long task of it, as there was much to digest, and much to ponder. I would like to meet Erich Fromm, and meantime I commend these essays to you. The cover is in purple lettering on a black background, but I would suggest 79309 a less macabre and more hopeful theme would be more appropriate. Criticisms come quickly to mind, but the vitality of the theme carried me on, and it was no surprise to read the closing sentence.
