Baruk Reviewed by It is well known that hypnosis gained popularity in France during the period of Charcot in Paris, Liebault and Bernheim in Nancy, but, afterwards, its use almost disappeared. Pierre Janet, who taught hypnosis, was the only person to remain interested in this way. Hypnosis now has a new popularity, especially in England and America, as well as in Italy, with Cranone and also in France (Chertok). The history and the significance of hypnosis is explained in this book. To understand hypnosis we have detailed the pathological processes which are able to produce in man an inhibition of will with a production of suggestability and automatism. The first chapters of the book are devoted to catalepsia, hysteria and catatonia. In ensuing chapters the history of hypnosis is studied, during which inhibitions are produced by artificial methods, in order that therapeutic suggestions are made. Details of special neuro-physiological and biological researches are made with Pierre Janet, in Professor Claude's Clinic, in the Sante-Anne Hospital, especially with electromyographia chemical researches and so on .... Researches were made in England, by Paterson and his pupils (Congress of Hypnosis in London). There is also another method which came from hypnosis. It is interesting to study the relations of psychoanalysis and hypnosis because Freud began by hypnosis. It is also important to note that hypnotic anaesthesia, which, according to Lassner, came before clinical anaesthesia. In 1829 an article was published in Academia of Medicine (Paris), concerning an anaesthetic state, which was induced by hypnosis. We also studied the method of Schultz, the yoga and the sophrology of Caycedo. We also published an article (with Professor Lantuejoul) concerning hypnosis and childbirth. Another chapter in this book deals with animal hypnosis and hypnotic drugs, especially with the sopochlarolose which we have studied after Pascal Brotteaux. It is necessary to point out many difficulties and dangers, especially about psychological imperialism and ethnical problems. There is also a philosophy of hypnosis, which leads to mystical conception from Asia, especially with nirvans.
