Abstract
Through the prism of the transformations that take place in the mind of its protagonist, Boussenard’s novel reveals a fundamental tendency toward the “scientification of the supernatural” in the closing years of the nineteenth century, and the resistance the supernatural puts up against this development. The mind of Monsieur Synthèse, always eager to push back the limits of science, shows itself to be deeply fragmented: he maintains a pathological and potentially pathogenic connection to science, while his mysterious friend Krishna seems to suggest an entirely different manner of conceptualizing the association between science and the supernatural.

Son personnage principal, le vieux savant Synthèse, est doué de pouvoirs extraordinaires et efficaces qu’il met au service de ses recherches et qui lui permettent par exemple de ne plus dormir et de ne se nourrir que de pilules. Cependant, l’échec de son « Grand-Œuvre » (qui visait à reconstituer dans un laboratoire, lui-même créé ad hoc, l’évolution des espèces), tout comme la dimension franchement inquiétante de l’épilogue Dix mille ans dans un bloc de glace que Boussenard donne à son roman quelques mois plus tard, interrogent l’intérêt qu’il y aurait pour l’humanité à généraliser de tels phénomènes psychiques. Entre extension du domaine de la science et folie, la représentation des états psychiques de Monsieur Synthèse illustre les ambiguïtés du mouvement de « scientification du merveilleux » à l’œuvre dans les dernières décennies du XIXe siècle.</abstract></profileDesc></hal></record>Pour manipuler ce document sous Unix (Dilib)
