<meta-value> book browsing The Role of Music in the Special Education of Handicapped Children. Albany, New York: Publications Distribution Unit, State Education Department. 114 pp. Illustrations, soft cover. The proceedings of a New York State conference on music and its use in the education of handicapped children are presented in this report. The booklet records the program of instructional units drawn up by various consultants and demonstrated at the 1971 meeting, which was held at the University of the State of New York, Albany. The units covered include music instruction for the special education of emotionally disturbed, brain damaged, mentally retarded, visually impaired, deaf, and other handicapped children. Each model is expressed in terms of a general goal and behavioral objectives, and learning experiences and accompanying resources are outlined. 88 The Magic of Opera. By J. Merrill Knapp. New York: Harper & Row, Publishers, Inc., 1972. 371 pp. Illustrations, music examples, glossary, index. Hard cover, $10; soft cover, $6.95. Designed as an introductory text on opera for the college student and general reader, the book is divided into two main parts—structure and history. In the first section, the author includes a study of the nature of opera and its conventions and devotes attention to such operatic constituents as libretto, music, voice, orchestra, and production. The historical survey focuses on opera before Mozart and covers trends through late Romantic opera. Brief summaries of operatic plots, analyses of representative music segments, and suggested reading lists are provided. The Mendelssohns: Three Generations of Genius, and Felix Mendelssohn: His Life, His Family, His Music. Both books by Herbert Kupferberg. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1972. Illustrations, indexes. Hard cover, $8.95 and $5.95, respectively. More than half of the first family history is devoted to the life of the most famous Mendelssohn, the musician Felix. However, Felix's paternal grandfather, the eighteenth-century Jewish philosopher Moses Mendelssohn, is also given substantial coverage; and the intellectual and social activities of Moses' children are recounted to show Felix as “the product of a family celebrated long before him for its contributions to European culture and thought.” A resource list of pertinent books and articles supplements the 272-page study. The second volume, a condensed version of the first biography for young readers, also treats the musician's development in terms of his family influences. The text concludes with a chapter summarizing Mendelssohn's better-known compositions and a list of recommended recordings. The Ballerinas: From the Court of Louis XIV to Pavlova. By Parmenia Mi-gel. New York: The Macmillan Company, 1972. 304 pp. Illustrations, bibliography, index. Hard cover, $10.95. Through historical fact and biographical evidence, the private lives and artistic reputations of various ballerinas are reconstructed in this annotated survey, which ranges from seventeenth-century France to nineteenth-century Russia. Photographs and reproductions of engravings, paintings, and lithographs are included among the fifty-one illustrations, and the book is well documented with performance dates and accounts of public reaction. e&Jhw/ yye&K Westminster Choir College June 24-29 Frances Cole, Igor Kipnis, Ralph Kirkpatrick, Sylvia Marlowe, Paul Maynard, Mile. Translated by Cesar Saerchinger. Da Capo Press, Inc., 1972. 288 pp. Hard cover, $8.95. A republication of the 1941 Oxford University Press edition, this discussion probes the philosophical, artistic, and historical criteria for assessing musical greatness. Differentiation is made between genius and talent, and the values of originality, prolificacy, and other qualities are explored in relation to specific composers and pronouncements of their excellence. To illustrate points, the author-musicologist compares the phenomenon of musical greatness to its counterpart in the visual arts and literature. Experimental Research in The Psychology of Music. Edited by Edwin Cordon. Studies in the Psychology of Music, Volume 8. Iowa City: University of Iowa Press, 1972. 135 pp. Illustrations, music examples, bibliography. Hard cover, $7.95. The eighth compendium in a series of experimental research studies in music, the volume contains six essays. Contents include Robert M. De Yarman's “An Experimental Analysis of the Development of Rhythmic and Tonal Capabilities of Kindergarten and First Grade Children,” Edwin Gordon's “Third-Year Results of a Five-Year Longitudinal Study of the Musical Achievement of Culturally-Disadvan-taged Students,” Jane A. Siegel's “The Nature of Absolute Pitch,” and Stanley L. Schleuter's “An Investigation of the Interrelation of Personality Traits, Musical Aptitude, and Musical Achievement.” Also included are “The Interrelation of Personality Traits, Musical Achievement, and Different Measures of Musical Aptitude” by Robert W. Thayer and “Are Steady State Musical Sounds as Identifiable as Steady State Vowels?” by John C. Webster, M. M. Woodhead, and A. Carpenter. Diagrams and statistical charts accompany textual explanations, and supplementary bibliographies are appended at the end of five of the articles. Building a Superior School Band Library. By Lawrence J. Intravaia. West Nyack, New York: Parker Publishing Company, Inc., 1972. 272 pp. Illustrations, bibliography, appendixes, index. Hard cover, $8.95. Criteria and methods for selecting, acquiring, cataloging, and maintaining various types of school band music are specified in this practical handbook. The author provides informative suggestions accompanied by sample charts and forms; annotated lists of books for the basic band library, a guide to music copyright law, and a key to publishers are appended. 90 Bossmen: Bill Monroe & Muddy Waters. By James Rooney. New York: Hayden Book Company, Inc., 1972. 159 pp. Illustrations, discographies. Soft cover, $2.95. In this dual account of Bill Monroe and Muddy Waters, biographical commentary is alternated with statements made by the two musicians during their separate interviews with the author. The paperback starts with a survey of Bill Monroe's childhood and his musical development as the “bossman” of bluegrass and early country music; the second part devotes attention to Muddy Waters and his emergence as the “bossman” of Chicago blues. Personal anecdotes and observations related by the two artists are printed in bold, and these, coupled with a variety of photographs, further enliven the interesting text. Byrd. By Imogen Hoist. Haydn. By H. C. Robbins, Landon. New York: Praeger Publishers, 1972. Illustrations, music examples, bibliography, index. Hard cover, $6.95 each. Part of “The Great Composers” series, these two attractive volumes discuss the major biographical details and artistic contributions of William Byrd and Joseph Haydn, respectively. Quotations from the personal and professional writings of the composers and their contemporaries vivify the accounts, as do photographic reproductions of paintings, engravings, manuscript pages, and other visual materials. A summary of the composer's works as well as a suggested reading list are provided for further reference at the back of the books, which have been designed as introductory texts for the general reader. Listen. By Joseph Kerman with Vivian Kerman. New York: Worth Publishers, Inc., 1972. 392 pp. Illustrations, music examples, glossary, index. Hard cover, $8.95. Accompanied by ten recorded selections, the introductory music text concentrates on “compositions as works of art” with “technical concepts … introduced only to illuminate pieces of music.” Historical surveys and fundamentals of music theory are presented to afford framework and perspective for music comprehension and analysis. After an initial section on rhythmic, melodic, and harmonic elements, the book devotes discussions to sixteenth-century Renaissance, Viennese, Romantic, and modern music styles. In addition to many music examples, the handsome volume contains a wealth of photographs, which picture instruments, art objects, scenes from ballets and other music performances, and general subject matter illustrative of the periods studied. Fluctuations in Bartok's creative and physical energies are recounted in the context of Europe's political and social activity. The Music Yearbook: A Survey and Directory with Statistics and Reference Articles for 1972-3. Edited by Arthur Jacobs. London: The Macmillan Press Ltd.; New York: St. Martin's Press, 1972. 750 pp. Illustrations. Hard cover, $15. A reference compendium with particular emphasis on major events and pertinent data in the British music world, the volume begins with surveys of the 1971 musical scene in the United Kingdom and elsewhere. Initial sections contain information on appointments and awards; premiere concert and opera performances; popular music; British film music; and so on. A part devoted to Ralph Vaughan Williams and his centenary features an essay on the composer by Peter Porter and a dis-cography of RVW's works by F. F. Clough and G. J. Cuming. Other reference articles deal with “The Musician and the Law,” “The Musician and Insurance,” copyright, publication, standard contracts and agreements, and other subjects relating to the music business in Great Britain. In addition, an extensive directory of the music profession in the United Kingdom and other countries includes entries for a variety of trade associations; amateur and professional performing groups; folk music organizations; composers, librettists, and translators; educational offices and institutions; publishing and recording companies; instrument manufacturers; competitions; festivals; and libraries and museums. </meta-value>
