Hardcover, $45.00 SAGE Publications, Inc.2007DOI: 10.1177/002743210709300507 JannHowell Hillcrest Middle School and Sevier Middle School, Greenville, South Carolina, pbear52@bellsouth.net I was drawn to this book because I was interested in the role women played in the shaping of music and art during a period when patriarchal authority was unquestioned. The late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries were when women began to exert political influence in Florence, Italy The Medici family traced its origins back before the 1400s, when they were probably the wealthiest family in Italy Their fame, fortune, and political savvy only increased over the years. By the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, this family's mark on Florence was secure because their gifts to the city had made Florence the cultural center of Europe and the cradle of the new humanism. The women who entered the stage at this time used their support of art and music to promote their views. Because of the patriarchal nature of many narratives of history, this subject has often been ignored. Kelley Harness is among the first to address the significance of these women in European cultural history. Although the book focuses on the Medici family, the most central figure is Maria Magdalena, who used religious themes to convey her power and Catholic ideals. She commissioned operas and insisted that her composers use musical techniques to represent self-control and resolve, and that the characters be realized musically This represented a departure from the typical recitative to convey text. Magdalena attended all rehearsals to ensure that the message conveyed was one she approved. The impact of Magdalena's influence on the development of Western music was profound. Musical techniques were pushed to the extreme under her influence, as were ballet and the visual arts. Harness recognizes the importance of the Medici women's influence and seeks to focus attention on their genius. Harness is an associate professor of musicology at the University of Minnesota. Her well-researched book is prolific with footnotes, documents, and manuscripts. She provides abundant pictures of artwork the women commissioned, including sculptures and oil paintings. This fine academic work also includes two appendixes, a bibliography, and an index. Although the book was probably intended for the serious reader, any musician would benefit from this fine work.</meta-value>
