<meta-value> Varese, A Looking-Glass Diary, Volume I: 1883-1928. By Louise Varese. New York: W. W. Norton & Company, Inc., 1972. 290 pp. Illustrations, index. Hard cover, $8.95. Edgard Varese's widow provides a charming, intimate, and affectionate account of the influential and iconoclastic composer's early career. Varese was a central figure in the world of contemporary music in this country for many years, and to list his colleagues, patrons, friends, and adversaries is to call the roll of the artistic and intellectual colony that made the arts equally vital and controversial in the earlier decades of our century. They all pass in review in the author's memoirs—witty, elegant, abrasive, and with not a few of their warts allowed to show. Louise Varese is not a trained musician, and so quite naturally her recollections of the composer and his milieu deal mostly with his personal life and with his more public activities as a conductor and concert promoter, and very little with his own creative work. Those of us who regard Varese's compositions as masterpieces will have to look elsewhere for direct insights into his working methods or his thinking as a far-sighted and intensely intellectual composer. But it is good to have an account of Varese the man, who does indeed spring to life quite vividly from the pages of this book. When the definitive critical monograph on Varese is written—and such a book must surely come— Louise Varese's memoirs will be essential in developing a full human portrayal of this giant among modern composers. The present book, designated as a first volume, covers the musician's life only through 1928. Presumably a second volume is in progress and will deal with the composer from that date until his death in 1965.—Cecil Isaac, Associate Professor of Music, Austin College, Sherman, Texas </meta-value>
