The start of construction marks the culmination of a two-year building fund campaign in which members and music industry have pledged close to $700,000. Although substantial funds still need to be raised to cover the full cost of the building, furnishings, and overhead, the MENC National Executive Board, at its meeting in Anaheim, voted to move ahead with the project, citing inflationary forecasts in the building industry and the fact that the staff now is occupying rented office space in Vienna, Virginia, on an interim basis. The headquarters operation moved March 1 from the National Education Association center in Washington, D. C. Many other national subject-area and administration groups also have left the NEA. Jack E. Schaeffer, 1972-1974 MENC national president, officiated at the groundbreaking ceremonies. He said that “this is believed to be the first national music organization to build an independent home,” and he described as “a truly historic moment” MENC's step to locate in “a home of our own…. We can look forward to housing our staff under its own roof rather than in loaned or rented quarters.” Reston, a planned community some twenty miles from downtown Washington and adjacent to Dulles International Airport, already has a population of over 23,000with a future projection of 75,000. In the Center for Educational Associations where MENC will have its building, neighbors will include the National Association of Secondary School Principals, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and the Council for Exceptional Children, all of whom already are occupying their own newly constructed buildings.
