Abstract
Because of its aesthetic ambition to be a synthesis of the arts and because of its fashionable weight as a cultural and luxurious product, opera is a uniquely socialized genre, inscribed in historical time. The example of the opera in France (the institution, its repertoire, and its audience) provide a model to track this double structuring between the lyrical genre produced by history and the history as staged in opera.
