Abstract

In 1998, the Super-Kamiokande experiment in Japan, using a water Cerenkov detector, had measured a deficit in the flux of the atmospheric neutrinos $\nu_{\mu}$ without observing an excess in the $\nu_{e}$ flux. This observation is explained by the neutrino oscillations, mechanism supposing that the neutrino mass is different from zero. In 1999, the CHOOZ experiment had excluded $\nu_{\mu}$$\to$$\nu_{e}$ oscillations in the atmospheric field. The OPERA experiment aims at prooving the $\nu_{\mu}$$\to$$\nu_{\tau}$ oscillations by the appearance of the $\nu_{\tau}$ and $\nu_{\mu}$$\to$$\nu_{e}$ oscillations by the appearance of the $\nu_{e}$. As a consequence, a neutrino beam almost pure in $\nu_{\mu}$ is produced at CERN (CNGS Beam) and sent on the OPERA detector
located under the Gran Sasso mountain 732 km further, in Italy.
More than 200 000 bricks compose the OPERA detector (the target mass is about 1 800 tons). The bricks are a pile of lead plates and photographic emulsion films. This modular structure allows to reconstruct the kink topology with a high spatial resolution ($\delta$$\theta$$\sim$1 mrad and $\delta$r$\sim$1$\mu$m) produced by the charged lepton $\tau$ (from $\nu_{\tau}$ interaction with a lead nucleus) and his decay products.
This thesis aims at characterizing the electrons in the OPERA detector for the analysis of the $\nu_{\mu}$$\to$$\nu_{\tau}$ oscillations (with $\tau$$\to$e) and the $\nu_{\mu}$$\to$$\nu_{e}$
channel, the $\nu_{e}$ interacting by CC and producing an electron.
