Abstract

This article is a condensed and slightly revised version of two chapters of a book currently in progress, relating the history of Crosby's Opera House and the personalities who brought it to life. Because the Opera House and all of its records were destroyed in the Chicago Fire of 1871, primary sources are extremely rare. Some original documents can be found in the collections of the Chicago Historical Society Library, the Harold Washington Library in Chicago, the New York Public Library, and the Library of Congress. The more readily available sources, however, are the advertisements, critical reviews, and other articles appearing in the Chicago newspapers, mainly the Chicago Tribune, the only one of the eighteen daily newspapers that seems to exist in complete form on microfilm. Uranus Crosby was the builder and original owner of the Opera House. Albert Crosby, Uranus's cousin and my great-great-grandfather, was the second and last owner. In addition to a number of documents, there were many bits of information and stories of the opera house passed down orally through the Crosby-Cropsey family. Although not formally documented, some of these stories appear in this article, having been put in writing for the first time. The author is grateful to The Opera Quarterly editorial board members Thomas G. Kaufman, for the inestimable assistance he provided during the preparation of this article and the accompanying chronology; and James A. Drake, for his editorial assistance with the first draft of this manuscript.
