Abstract
Although the Romanian baritone Nicolae Herlea and the Romanian soprano Mariana Nicolesco never sang together on the stages of the operatic world, they joined forces in the 2001 Hariclea Darclée International Voice Competition, when founder and honorary president Miss Nicolesco invited Herlea to be president of that year's international jury. This competition‐and‐festival, held biennially in Braila (the city where the soprano who created Puccini's Tosca was born in 1860), hosts a powerful creative force—all the more remarkable since no two persons could differ in character more than the modest, introvert Herlea and the flamboyant, vibrant, and energetic diva Nicolesco.
