Abstract
This paper takes a look at the complex problem of the adaptation of a literary text for an opera libretto. After some brief considerations regarding the question of the authority of the derived text and the concepts of fidelity' and 'equivalence', taken from translation theory, an analysis is made of two librettos, those for Britten's operas «The Turn of the Screw» and «Billy Budd». Each is examined in terms of its faithfulness to the 'plot' and 'fabula' of the original stories. The differences frequently regard the invention of new scenes, to render the action more dramatic. Some overall differences in ideological approach are also observed. In conclusion, a few remarks are made regarding the general equivalent effect of the two works.
