Abstract

An examination of the changes that were made to the libretto of Rodelinda during the period of composition demonstrates that Handel made significant contributions to the dramatic shape of the opera. In order to identify these changes, the physical nature of the libretto in both its pre-composition and its post-composition state is established. Through close study of the autograph score, the performing score, Salvi’s source libretto, and Haym’s printed libretto, and by careful interpretation of the evidence that they provide, it is possible to identify improvements that occurred to Handel while he was composing. In some cases he would have asked Haym to provide different texts; in others he made changes (alterations, deletions, and additions) without reference to Haym. The article considers the reasons for Handel’s interventions and their effect on the musical drama. In the more radical changes Handel was clearly imagining the impact of the opera when performed onstage, both in the immediate dramatic context and in the working out of the drama over several scenes.
