Abstract

Der Beitrag ist dem Traktat 'De podagra Enchiridion' gewidmet, den der Arzt Donato Antonio Ferri für den marchese von Trevico, Cicco Loffredo verfasst hat (Neapel 1585). Ferri untersucht darin das Wesen der Gicht, die schmerzhaften symptome, ihre Diagnose und verlaufsprognose sowie therapiemöglichkeiten, darunter nicht zuletzt Thermalkuren, die im hippokratischen Sinne als äußerstes Mittel für eine sonst nicht heilbare Krankheit angesehen werden. Genaue Vorschriften über Besuch und Gebrauch der Bäder werden formuliert, wobei sich der Autor auf antike Autoritäten sowie zeitgenössische Studien über Kampaniens Thermalquellen stützt. Die Prinzipien der galenischen Medizin liegen Ferri am Herzen : Erfahrung und rationale Wissenschaft müssen die Entscheidungen von Arzt und Patienten leiten.
