Essai consacré à l'opéra Sofonisba (1805), musique de Ferdinando Paër, vers de Domenico Rossetti. Présentation des sources historiques des faits représentés et de la fortune de Sophonisbe au théâtre, principalement à l’opéra. Analyse du livret dans son évolution et dans sa structure, et de la caractérisation des personnages. Etude des voix, dans une lecture rapprochée de la partition et des versions qui l’ont précédée. Considérations sur les choix de versification.
