Abstract

The singing formant is a harmonic reinforcement that occurs at about 3000 Hz in opera singers. The first part of this article describes the singing formant from a scientific point of view by defining it in acoustic and physiological terms. Perceptual judgements have shown that it gives a particular vocal quality (the voice is "bright" and carries), as often mentioned by voice teachers and musicians.
