Abstract

How could one be a physician, a skeptic about his own art, and practise medicine during forty years ? the brief chapter devoted to epilepsy in Francisco Sanchez' (ca. 1550-1623) Opera Medica is characteristic of the wise treatment of internal diseases by this student of Jean Fernel. His case is particularly interesting, less by his actual explanation of epilepsy, than by his silences and by the importance he grants to this kind of disease in his works. With his sober method of describing signs and symptoms, and his lack of vanity in theoretical developments, he appears as a critical and demanding witness of contemporary medicine, while he supports the " virus " as a cause of epilepsy. Sanchez is an important representative of the implicite rejection of many medical authorities, because he carries on systematic doubt, without having any contact with the pre-cartesian trends.

<abstract xml:lang="fr">Comment un médecin peut-il être fondamentalement sceptique sur son art et pratiquer la médecine pendant quarante ans ? le bref chapitre sur l'épilepsie des Opera Medica de Francisco Sanchez (ca. 1550-1623) est caractéristique du traitement prudent des maladies internes par cet élève de Fernel. Son cas est particulièrement intéressant, moins par ce qu'il dit vraiment de l'épilepsie, que par ce qu'il tait et par la place que tient ce type de maladie dans son œuvre. La sobriété de sa méthode de description des signes et des symptômes, son absence de prétention dans les développements théoriques en font un témoin exigeant et critique de la médecine de son temps tout en accréditant la thèse du poison (" virus ") comme cause de l'épilepsie. Sanchez représente un jalon important dans le rejet implicite d'une partie des autorités médicales par sa mise en pratique du doute systématique, sans qu'il ait eu quelque contact que ce soit avec les courants pré-cartésiens.</abstract>
