Abstract

Les Surprises de l'amour was first performed in public at Versailles in 1748. From this first version, Rameau retained only a few scenes to create a new version of the work which was published in 1757, and performed at the “Académie royale de musique” in Paris that same year. As was his wont, Rameau revised this new work several further times between May 1757 and February 1759, so that a new edition of the second act, La Lyre enchantée, had to be published in 1758. The public reception of the Paris performance of Les Surprises de l'amour, which, according to the Mercure de France of July 1757, “the public goes to see again with ever the same pleasure” was, on the whole, very positive. Fréron, writing in L'Année littéraire in 1757, praised Rameau's “richness, his harmony, brilliant and sublime symphonies », and credited the musician with “talents which make him the first Composer in Europe”.

<abstract xml:lang="fr">La vie publique des Surprises de l'amour commence à Versailles en 1748. De cette version originale, Rameau ne retient que quelques scènes pour une nouvelle version de l'œuvre publiée en 1757 et donnée à l'Académie royale de musique de Paris la même année. Fidèle à ses habitudes, Rameau révise son œuvre plusieurs fois entre mai 1757 et février 1759 au point de justifier en 1758, une seconde édition du deuxième acte, La Lyre enchantée. La réception de ces Surprises de l'amour parisiennes que le "public revoit toujours avec le même plaisir" (Mercure de France, juillet 1757) fut largement positive dans son ensemble. Ainsi, dans une critique parue dans L'Année littéraire en 1757, Fréron vante "sa richesse, son harmonie et ses brillantes et sublimes symphonies", accordant à Rameau des "talents qui en font le premier Compositeur de l'Europe".</abstract>
