Abstract
In Old Testament narrative structure sometimes a prayer or hymn is inserted into an important passage praising, the very God who is acting here. Composed from Old Testament texts Mary's hymn of praise announces the God of the Old Covenant, who is going to be the mighty and merciful saviour of his people and the peoples, so fulfilling the covenants of David and Abraham. It is Jesus, the son of Mary, in whom this takes place. Preparing the gospel that follows the mother of the Messiah outlines an image of God based on the Old Testament spirituality of the poor. She concludes by taking a view into the future in order to realize the eschatological fulfilment of God's promises. Whoever recites this hymn affirms his faith in the saving God of the Old and New Covenants.
