Abstract

Martin Luther's interpretation of the Magnificat dating from 1521 is an imposing document of the veneration of Mary founded on the Bible. Luther's commentary introduces an aspect into the oecumenical dialogue that has often been neglected. The doctrine of justification that has been disputed on an level so far will have to be visualized again. This can be done when regarding the biographies of biblical characters, e.g. the biography of Mary who has generally been seen as an exemplary believer. Thus we might ask about the role of images in the church (Luke, the painter). The following exegetical approach to Luke 1,46-55 inspired by Martin Luther's interpretation intends to be a contribution to an oecumenical spirituality based on the Bible.
