Abstract

According to Walter von Loewenich, the theologia crucis is a principle of Luther's entire theology. This essay shows that this proposition is also true for the commentary on the Magnificat, which Luther wrote in 1520/21: On the basis of the radical opposition of God and man, Luther emphasizes God's omnipotence and presents God's double working in humans as he rejects the wise, powerful and rich, and, in hiddenness, devotes himself to the poor in spirit, the oppressed and the miserable. Luther also presents the godless self-centeredness of man and his need to become totally passive in the process of justification. Consequently, Luther's commentary must be understood as an interpretation of the Magnificat in the context of the theologia crucis, which Luther explicitly developed in the Disputatio Heidelbergensis (1518) and in his Operationes in Psalmos (1519-21).
