Abstract

The present contribution analyzes Lk 1:39-45 within the narrative architecture of the first chapter of the Gospel according to Luke, where the text constitutes the linchpin from both a literary and theological point of view. It's relation to the text of the Annunciation to Mary (Lk 1:26-38) makes Mary's visit to Elizabeth the second panel of a diptych, so that it's not to be interpreted as a sign of verification (Lk 1.36 to 37) but as the event of ful filment of a mission of evangelization. Jesus, still in the womb, is the primary concern. He is the mediator of the action of divine grace which, through Mary's greeting (Lk 1,40.41.44), expands to every character: Baptist, Elizabeth and Zechariah. The theme of femininity, friendliness and co-operation of the two mothers that meet, shows the pattern of spreading the Word of God. The above text, thus, presents the basic soteriological vision of Luke as the paradigmatic evangelizing mission of Jesus and the Christian community after his resurrection.
