MISSION STUDIES Bibliography MISSION STUDIES Bibliography (former IAMS Library) offers an opportunity to share fruits of research and study on mission. IAMS members are invited to send a copy of their publications to MISSION STUDIES along with a short summary (by preference in English). Listed below are publications sent to the editor. Book reviews are signed by name. Araya, Victorio: God of the Poor. The Mystery of God in Latin American Liberation Theology. Orbis Books/Maryknoll, N.Y. 1987, 205 pp. (ISBN 0-88344-565-4; Price US$ 9.95) In this work, Victorio Araya offers a perspective on the mystery of God from "the underside of history" - - from the viewpoint of the poor and oppressed who struggle daily for a liberation to the justice of God's kingdom. Drawing on the writings of many of the foremost liberation theologians (Gustavo Gutierrez, Jon Sobrino, Leonardo Boff, Clodovis Boff, and Enrique Dussel, among others) Araya presents a concept of God as the God of the poor. _ He first elucidates the hermeneutic key for this view of God, then goes on to a treat- ment of the manifestation of the mystery of God through Jesus and through the suf- . fering, love, and solidarity of the poor, then to a discussion of the demands of a faith in , a God of the poor: the praxis of love and justice. God of the Poor concludes with an examination of the basic content of liberation theology's s view of God and the reasons for what this theology says and where it intends to go. Boff, Clodovis: Feet-on-the Ground Theology. A Brazilian Journey. (Cover) Orbis Books/Maryknoll, N.Y. 1987, 185 pp. (ISBN 0-88344-554-9; Price US$ 8.95) This fascinating account of theologian Clodovis Boff's five-month missionary journey among the people of western Brazil offers a unique and inspiring view of a people in the process of liberation. Boff records the day-to-day details of his travels and en- counters among the rubber-gatherers of the remote jungle regions, with the members of basic. Christian communities in small towns, and with the priests and lay leaders engaged in pastoral work among the poor. He shares the life, work, struggles, and concerns of these people engaged in their various tasks. From these observations and reflections one can see everyday experience and theological insight arising one from the other. Feet-on-the-Ground Theology reveals the basic dimensions of grassroots lib- eration theology, providing a portrait of the church of the poor. Boff, Leonardo/Boff, Clodovis: Introducing Liberation Theology. (Cover) Orbis Books/Maryknoll, N.Y.; Search Press/Kent 1987, 99 pp. (ISBN 0-88344-554-9; Price US$ 7.95) Two of Latin America's foremost theologians, brothers Leonardo and Clodovis Boff, have written this book for the general reader who asks, "What is liberation theology?" With stunning precision and clarity, they describe the sources of this "theology in movement," its main themes and challenges, its roots in Latin America, and its rever- berations throughout the world. . - ' ,.. ,

(engl.: Missionary Training Models in Scandinavia as related to the missions situation and the organizational identity.) (Annals of the Finnish Society for Missiology and Ecumenics, 49) Samfundet för missiologi och ekumenik/Helsingfors 1986, 428 pp. (ISBN 951-95207-4-0) Generally research into missionary training has been regarded as motivated due to the apparent features of today's s missions situation, features such as the rising religious commitment, increasing missionary co-operation and the need for intensified con- sideration of the life career of the missionary. In addition to the missions situation it has been regarded as necessary to consider that missionary organizations have various organizational identities influencing their missionary training. In a comparative analysis the missionary training arrangements of six Scandinavian Lutheran missions were dealt with in relation to the missions situation and the organ- izational identity. Training of an academic or seminary type was represented in the conservative, but receptive organizations co-operating with the church, that is The Norwegian Missionary Society and The Swedish Evangelical Mission. The Bible school setting was typified by the strongly conservative and somewhat church-opposed societies, that is The Norwegian Lutheran Mission and the Finnish Lutheran Mission, while separate short missionary courses were found in the theologically open and firmly church-related missions, that is The Finnish Evangelical Lutheran Mission (before 1985 named The Finnish Missionary Society) and The Church of Sweden Mission. (Abstract) Fugmann, Gernot (ed.): Ethics and Development in Papua New Guinea. (Point Series, 9) Fugmann, Gernot (ed.): The Birth of an Indigenous Church. (Point Series, 10) The Melanesian Institute for Pastoral and Socio-Economic Service/Goroka, Papua New Guinea 1986 (ISSN 0253-2913) At first glance one is tempted to respond to the two anthologies by stating: sure . enough the questions of "Ethics and Development" are burning and pressing issues in a country like Papua New Guinea about ten years after independence, but what about

"Stories" from the past, especially as they only tell the mission history of one of the churches in this country, the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Papua New Guinea? However, as I kept on reading these simple accounts of the life and faith experiences of Melanesian Evangelists, elders and leaders, I for one, became increasingly absorbed, touched and even moved (see particularly the contribution: Manana - God Heard Her Cry, p. 32ss). Other accounts are impressive in their unsentimental matter of fact style, telling a life of witness and commitment to spread God's word among their compatriots (like Zurenuo's The Gospel Held Me Captive, p. 255s). The Editor, Gernot Fugmann, the then director of the Melanesian Institute, not only has provided a sympathetic introduction, but also a very helpful frame for the docu- ments all written by Melanesians. It is particularly these short introductions to the various chapters that make this anthology profitable reading also for those, who are not so intimately familiar with the history of the Lutheran Church in Papua New Guinea. ' Fugmann also adds an epilogue emphasizing again - like in the introduction - the purpose of this book. It is basically out of a pastoral concern that these "Stories" were collected and edited: to help present-day Lutheran Christians in Papua New Guinea to find their identity in the faith and commitment of their grandfathers and fathers. As this documentation refrains from painting a rosy picture, it also reflects the process and the results of cross-cultural contacts, describing from a local point of view, adjustment movements (cargo cults) and the role of expatriates. It was published 100 years after the first Lutheran missionary came to PNG and it spans the time from the first Baptism (Sila Kamungsanga - The first baptised Lutheran, p. 1 ss) to the important Declaration of Autonomy (p. 261ss) by the first t local Bishop of this church to the present day (Centenary Celebration Speech by Head Bishop Getake S. Gam, p. 267ss). ' Without ever stating it, this volume is an "apologia" in the best church-historical sense of the word. Or to put it in biblical terms: "To answer anyone, to ask you to explain the hope you have in you" (1.Pet.3:15). This anthology gives the present-day Christians in Papua New Guinea - as they are struggling with fundamentalistic and pentecostal sects and groups or with an attitude of shallow indifference - a chance to be inspired by the "large crowd of witnesses round" them (Hebrews 1 2:1 ). (Hannes Gaenssbauer) Guerrero, Andrés G.: A Chicano Theology. Orbis Books/Maryknoll, New York 1987, 186 pp. (ISBN 0-88344-407-0; Price US$ 11.95) For one hundred and thirty years we Chicanos have been underrepresented and virtu- ally voiceless in the social, economic, political, and spiritual decisions that have determined our destiny. This book is a study of our sociohistorical and ecclesiastical situation. It is also an investigation of the symbolic role of Nuestra Senora de Gudadolupe and of the notion of La Raza C6smica in understanding the Chicano cosmic-universal experience of oppression and in developing a Chicano theology of liberation. Part 1 outlines the Chicano sociohistorical and ecclesiastical written tradition (chapters 1 and 2) and serves as an introduction for the reader to the Chicano oral tradition, which is explored in Part 2 (chapter 3). The first chapter presents a brief history of the Chicanos in the Southwest. Fray Bartolome de Las Casas and Padre Jose Antonio Martinez exemplify the two conquests described in this chapter. Chapter 2 examines the Chicano cosmic experience of oppression.

Part 2 begins by exploring the Chicano oral tradition through interviews with nine Chicano leaders (two women and seven men). Chapter 3 consists of a synthesis of the interviews with these leaders, who give in-depth responses to several issues that oppress our people. These persons were chosen because of their commitment and de- dication to the Chicano community. Chapter 4 analyzes the symbol of Guadalupe as it pertains to the Chicano situation. Chapter 5 analyzes the symbol of La Raza Cosmica. It is a symbol of the pride we feel in being identified as Chicano and in combatting the milieu of oppression in which Chicanos are stereotyped as inferiors. Chapter 6 sets out some conclusions and perspectives. It first identifies the poor (los pobres). It states that the Magnificat provides a theological base for Guadalupe as she provides for us a sociological vision of a new humanity - a vision in which the mighty are brought down and the lowly are raised up. Luke's announcement of the good news (4:18-19) is a message of liberation to the oppressed. Oppressed Chicanos, with their folk Catholicism, respond to this message by nurturing the symbol of Guadalupe and asking for her intercession. ' This chapter explores the symbolic roles of Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe and La Raza Cbsmica in the development of a Chicano theology of liberation. Both are symbols that unify us and give cosmic order and hope to our situation of oppression. Both relate to the Lukan message of the good news of liberation to the oppressed. Finally, this last chapter sets out the essential elements of a Chicano theology of liberation as derived from an analysis of the experiences of the Chicano leaders inter- viewed. A Chicano theology of liberation ought not to support in any way elements or acts or theories that are racist, sexist, anti-Semitic, or classist. The heart (el corazon) of its content ought to be in the context of the Lukan message of the good news to the poor. Andrés G. Guerrero (Saginaw/Michigan) Hedlund, Roger E.: Mission to Man in the Bible. Evangelical Literature Service/Madras 1985, 348 pp. Dr. R.E. Hedlund's Mission to Man in the Bible is a timely publication in the field of the theology of mission. It is not only a mine of information in theology and missiology, but also evaluates critically the current theologies whether it be pluralism of religions, liberation theo- logy or humanisation from the perspective of evangelical theology. The latest publi- cations of the East and West have received fair and adequate treatment in the book. The missiological problems and opportunities are discussed. Dr. Roger E. Hedlund, an American by birth, came to India in 1974. From 1974 to 1978 he taught missiology at the Union Biblical Seminary, (Yavatmal) Pune. At present he is the International Co-ordinator and lecturer of the Church Growth Research Centre, Madras. Heijke, Jan P.: Marriage in Africa. (Pro Mundi Vita. Africa Dossier 36) Pro Mundi Vita/Brussels 1986; 30 pp. This dossier seeks: 1) to promote a better understanding of the specific characteristics of the African matrimonial systems; 2) to demonstrate the lack of comprehension which still exists between the official Catholic ecclesiastical approach and the African reality - the 1980 Roman Bishops' Synod on marriage sharply illustrated this gulf; 3) to formulate some pastoral problems, stressing prudence rather than giving precise directives.
Kavunkal, Jacob (ed.): Mission of an Emerging World Church. Dove Communications/Melbourne 1986, 111 pp. Evangelization is the Church's vocation proper, and it is a complex process with integral parts which are complimentary and mutually enriching .... This mission is directed to the world which necessarily undergoes changes in perspectives and pri- orities. Hence mission must be subjected to scrutiny constantly to see its dimensions and priorities are in fact a service to the world. - - , (from the Introduction) - Kirwen, Michael C..(ed.): A Model Four Semester Syllabus for Transcultural Theology Overseas. The Edwin Mellen Press/Lewiston N.Y. 1986, X+212 pp. (ISBN 0-88946-047-7; Price US$ 49.95) This four semester syllabus was taught in Tanzania from August 1981 through June 1983. It was designed as an experimental program in response to the call for ex- perimentation in theological education at all levels by the Seventh General Chapter of the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers in 1978. The program was called TEFO -- Theo- logical Education and Formation Overseas. Two Maryknoll seminarians from the Mary- knoll School of Theology participated in the program and were awarded forty-seven academic credits towards their Master of Divinity degrees. These students had completed one year of systematic theology at Maryknoll, New York, before joining the program. The syllabus from this experiment is of interest to all educators who are involved in training missionaries as it delineates an innovative transcultural method for teaching systematic theology to North American students in an overseas context. , (from the author's Foreword) Langer-Kaneko, Christiane: Das Reine Land. Zur Begegnung von Amida-Buddhismus und Christentum. (Zeitschrift für Religions- und Geistesgeschichte, Beiheft 29) E.J. Brill/Leiden 1986, XII+194 pp. (ISBN 9-00407-786-3; Price Gld. 70.-) This work uses the model of Japanese Amida or Pure Land Buddhism to indicate how meaning is given to Man and to explain the way in which liberation from suffering is shown to him. According to Buddhist teaching, liberation is achieved in the course of illumination. The reason for the suffering of existence is a 'lack of clarity', a 'lack of knowledge', the inability to see things and all living creatures in their true nature, their 'thisness'. And this again is caused by the fact that Man holds firm to his Ego. During illumination the Ego is overcome and the human being awakens to his true self, ' which is Buddha. In the traditional schools of Japanese Buddhism, illumination is achieved by way of meditation by one's own powers. The Pure Land schools teach the 'easy way' of reliance on the Other Power of Amida Buddha. ' After an exhaustive presentation of the doctrine of Amida Buddhism, in part.icular as it is put forward by Shinran (1173-1262), three German-speaking historians of theology and religion put forward their interpretations of the Pure Land doctrine. In a concluding chapter, the author indicates common ground for a meeting of Amida Buddhism and Christianity, a meeting, which is only just beginning to come about.

Lovett, Brendan: Life Before Death. Inculturating Hope. Claretian Publications/Quezon City, Philippines 1986, 120 pp. (ISBN 971-501-149-7) This short book presents the transformative power of Christian faith ,in overcoming some alienating distortions like a life after-death pre-occupation. The reader will find, therefore, a strong criticism of pious contemporary theological writings which attempt to escape the demands of historical responsibility. Written out of the Philippine context, Lovett situates this within the workings of the wider world system. The core of the book is a historical critique of the emergence and development of the world system; the concluding chapters articulate the shape of a creative and adequate response. _-. Throughout, a constructive dialogue is carried on with movements of modern times, from Marxism to the ecological movements. Brendan Lovett, SSC, obtained post-graduate studies in Linguistic Analysis and Approaches in Theology in Germany. He is currently connected with the Interdiocesan .Seminary: Dipolog, Ozamis, Pagadian, Iligan and Marawi. (Cover) Miiller, Karl: Mission Theology. An Introduction. With Contributions by Hans-Werner Gensichen and Horst Rzepkowski. (Studia Instituti Missiologici Societatis Verbi Divini 39) Steyler Verlag-Wort und Werk/Nettetal 1987, 237 p. (ISBN 3-8050-0191-6; Price DM 30,--) Christian mission in the world today encounters ever new situations, different religions and worldviews, and a variety of cultures. But the burden and lessons of history must also be taken into account, since Christian mission today still bears traces of its past association with colonialism. This makes for uncertainty and creates tensions. A comprehensive treatmEnt of the status mission today will introduce the interested reader to this complex question. After much long and controversial discussion of the theological foundation of mission, _ dialogue, development aid, peace and justice, the salvific value of other religions, the relationship of mission to the Church and to ecumenism, a comprehensive examination of the entire question would serve as a valuable means of orientation for the student and the interested lay person. Since mission is a concern of the whole Church, and . since a basis acquaintance with missiological issues is indispensable, especially for theology students, such a work would provide the necessary resources for a study of mission. Orbis Books/Maryknoll, N.Y. 1987, 192 pp. (ISBN 0-88344-357-0; Price US$ 9.95) Arturo Paoli, a member of the Congregation of the Little Brothers of the Gospel of Charles de Foucauld, lived as a contemplative in action in a small settlement in the west of Venezuela. He shared his valleyside cabin with Pedro, an unchurched 20 year old who feels an attraction to the person and teaching of Jesus Christ. These meditations and reflections are addressed to Pedro, who stimulates them by asking

religious questions. Paoli tries to answer in depth, but in a way that will be meaning- ful to a young person of narrow secular horizons. The major thrust of the author's thought is communion-building and its major ob- stacles. Other elements of Christian life touched on in these conversations (conversion, reconciliation, hope, prayer, contemplation, prophecy, love) are viewed in relation to building a community of brothers and sisters - what the church is all about, what the church is, or is to become. ' (Cover) , Pierard, Richard V.: John R. Mott and the Rift in the Ecumenical Movement during World War I in: Journal of Ecumenical Studies 23(1986)601-620 John R. Mott was the central figure in the movement for ecumenical cooperation that developed in the wake of the Edinburgh World Missionary Conference of 1910, but the coming of war in 1914 shattered the dream of Christiari solidarity. By seizing German mission properties and expelling or interning missionaries, the Allies violated the principle of the "supranationality of missions," and acrimonious charges and counter- charges were hurled at each other by the Western and German church leaders. As a neutral and chair of the Continuation Committee, Mott tried vainly to mediate the differences and to keep the nascent ecumenical movement intact. The Committee's secretary, J.H. Oldham of Britain, aided in this effort. Visits to Germany in 1914 and 1916 failed to stem the growth of animosity between the two camps, because the German mission leaders felt Mott, with his close ties with President Wilson, was not really neutral. When Mott took part in a diplomatic mission to Russia after the United States had entered the war, they then formally repudiated his leadership. Nationalism had won out over the ecumenical ideal, and the restoration of ties after the peace took place only after a long and tortuous process. (Richard V. Pierard) Pierard, Richard V.: Volkish Thought and Christian Missions in Early Twentieth Century Germany. in: Essays in Religious Studies for Andrew Walls. Department of Religious Studies /University of Aberdeen 1986, 138-154. The pitfalls in using secular concepts and modes of expression to convey Christian ideas are excellently revealed by the manner in which German volkish thought was incorporated into a Christian framework. German Protestant missionary theorists began using its ideas and terminology to express their understanding .of the Christian world mission, and this led many outside observers to suspect, incorrectly to be sure, that some sort of affinity existed between German missiology and the Nazi movement. The volkish ideas that impacted most seriously on mission theory were the Volks- kirche, the antithesis between culture and civilisation, and the Volksnomos, and this pattern of thinking weakened the missionary establishment as the Third Reich emerged in all its ferocity. (Richard V. Pierard) Piggin, Stuart/Roxborogh, John: The St. Andrews Seven. The Finest Flowering of Missionary Zeal in Scottish History. The Banner of Truth Trust/Edinburgh-Carlisle 1985, 130 pp. (ISBN 0-85151-428-6; Price £ 3.25) Occasionally, in the annals of Christian history, the heroic stories of long-forgotten movements of God's Spirit are rediscovered. This little book contains the narrative of

such a movement in the nineteenth century. Its chief characters are the great Thomas Chalmers, and six of his students: Alexander Duff, John Urquhart, John Adam, Robert Nesbit, William Sinclair Mackay and John Ewart. These six young men, deeply in- fluenced by the legendary Chalmers, also exerted a remarkable influence on one another as fellow students at the University of Saint Andrews, Scotland, in the 1820's. Their influence in later life, especially in India, was to be far beyond their wildest ex- pectation, even in their teenage enthusiasm to serve Christ to the ends of the earth. In this extraordinary account, Stuart Piggin and John Roxborogh, both experts in the field of missions, trace vividly and popularly the story - the aspirations, fears, doubts, struggles, opposition, sorrows, triumphs - of these six most gifted and dedicated young Christians. In moving simplicity they recount the astonishing influence of one of their number who died before he could fulfil his heart's ambitions, but //hose life led the others to the profound conviction that 'Only one thing seemed to matter: to discover God's s will and do it'. The St. Andrews Seven not only restore; their name from obscurity, but also challenges the church of today to put aside it: mediocrity and respond obediently to Christ's great commission. ' Dr Stuart Piggin is Senior Lecturer in History at the University of Wollongong, Australia. ' Dr John Roxborogh teaches Church History at Seminari Theoloji Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur. " (Cover) Pobee, John S./Hallencreutz, Carl F. (eds.): Variations in Christian Theology in Africa. Uzima Press/Nairobi 1986, 113 pp. In Africa there is a wide variety of Christian theologies. We may venture to dis- tinguish between at least four main streams. The first is the reflection on divinity within the ancient oriental Churches in Northeastern Africa. Since the Alexandria Confession of 1976 and the significant ecumenical contribution of the Coptic Church in Egypt, references to this theological tradition is not merely of antiquarian interest. The other theological stream with characteristics of its own is the theoretical reflec- tion on divinity within so called African Independent Churches. Concrete features of authentic spirituality are, perhaps, more striking here than elaborate theological articu-Iation. However, there is not only one style of reflection on divinity and certainly such reflection is going on and translated into practice within African Independency. The two remaining theological streams are Black Theology and African Theology in a more specific sense. These distinctions seem to be more relevant than a denomi- national distinction between Protestant and Catholic theology in Africa. Indeed, Black Theology and African Theology in a specific sense influence theoretical reflection on divinity within both Catholic and Protestant Churches in different parts of Africa. And, of course, there are also different emphases within both Black and African Theology. In this collection of essays there are primarily variations between Black and African Theology and within African Theology which will be highlighted. The material was presented and assessed at a symposion convened by the Olaus Petri Foundation of Uppsala University immediately following The Christian World Conference on Life and Peace, April 19-23, 1983. It provides an outline history of the coming of the different churches and contains suggestions as to how people can research the story of their own congregations, de- nominations or Christian organisations. ' (from the author's Preface) Sobrino, Jon: Jesus in Latin America. Orbis Books/Maryknoll, N.Y. 1987, 189 pp. (ISBN 0-88344-412-7) This book is a collection of articles written between 1978 and 1982. With the ex- ception of chapter 2, each of the articles has been previously published. The central theme of all of them is Jesus of Nazareth and his relevance to faith and the Christian . life in Latin America. The first two articles have an additional theoretical finality: The first seeks to remove doubts and answer questions. addressed to Latin American christology and to my Christology at the Crossroads (Maryknoll, N.Y.: Orbis, 1978). The second is an attempt to offer a more precise theoretical explanation of the meaning of the historical Jesus for christology. (from the author's Preface) Thelle, Notto R.: Buddhism and Christianity in Japan. From Conflict to Dialogue, 1854-1899. University of Hawaii Press/Honolulu 1987, 355 pp. (ISBN 0-82481-006-6; Price US$ 30.00) The modern dialogue between Buddhism and Christianity in Japan is reaching new depths and insights and is being recognized today as a challenging and promising point of contact between two cultures. This volume is based on the premise that an under- standing of the past is important for meaningful interaction in the present. By placing the Buddhist-Christian dialogue in historical perspective, the author provides an essential element for critical and creative reflection on today's dialogue. Thelle's central themes are the connection between Christian expansion and Buddhist anti-Christian campaigns, religion and nationalism, Christian impact on Buddhist re- ' form movements, attempts at unifying the two faiths into a new religiosity, and the development of an indigenous Japanese theology. He throws light on cross-cultural interactions far beyond the specialized area of religion and theology. With its broad cultural and sociopolitical scope, this book will interest all students of Japanese history and culture. Notto R. Thelle was born in Hong Kong of Norwegian missionary parents. Educated in ' Norway, he holds a doctorate in theology from the University of Oslo. After training in Japanese studies (Sheffield, England) and Buddhist studies (Otani University, Kyoto), he became associate director of Kyoto's National Christian Council Center for the . Study . of Japanese Religions, an organization that has played a pioneer role in Buddhist-Christian dialogue. . ' (Cover)
