Abstract

The effect of graduated compression of soil by wheel traffic of machinery on soil properties was evaluated on two typical soils of Czechoslovakia. The intensity of the compaction and its harmfulness were in proportion to the contact pressure and the number of wheel passes. Compaction caused degradation of soil structure and worsening of the physical properties (porosity, bulk density, permeability, penetration resistance), which worsened the biochemical conditions (nitrification) and crop yields. The basic characteristics of degraded structures, established through microstructural analysis by scanning electron microscopy, are discussed.
