Abstract

A series of melanotic lesions of the lips, which are commonly recognized but poorly described, are reported. The authors suggest labial melanotic macule as a descriptive term for these lesions. They occur predominantly on the lower lip and show a high incidence in young adults. The similarities and differences between these lesions and cutaneous melanotic lesions are pointed out; it is suggested that some probably have no exact cutaneous counterpart. Others, however, are posttraumatic, and some are undoubtedly ephelides. Thus, the labial melanotic macule comprises at least three different entities.
