Abstract

Sargassum vulgare C. Agardh and Sargassum johnstonii Setchell & Gardner bear 4–6 oogonia in each oogonial conceptacle, which arise from a single layer of cells that lines the conceptacle wall. The developmental sequences of the oogonium in these Sargassum species offer an interesting system for the study of the synthesis and secretion of two different kinds of polysaccharides that are histochemically detectable. The mature oogonium is surrounded by three wall layers, namely exochiton, mesochiton and endochiton.During mesochiton formation, there are foldings in the nuclear membrane and vacuolation in the nucleoplasm. The marked structural changes in both nuclear morphology and staining properties indicate that these changes are of biological significance and prepare the oogonial cytoplasm for the succeeding morphologically different reproductive phase.
