Five finger position two piano numbers, exceedingly easy, student a n d student, ensemble. N o s. and 6 are especially nice. SUSAN T. CANFIELD College and University Bands, L. V. B u c k ton. Teachers' College, Columbia University, N e w York. Mr. Buckton gives a report of statistical nature covering the organization and administration of college a n d university bands. Cost of uniforms, teaching, a n d maintainance, together with discussion of standards are among t h e items conL E E M. LOCKHART cerned i n the report. Holmes Band Book. Carl Fischer, I n c. T h e following quotation tells t h e whole story. It is extracted from t h e foreword of t h e publication: “ This little book has been written with t h e express purpose of providing two easy programs of seven numbers each. T h e numbers included in t h e first program are all of very easy grade a n d well within the capabilities of a band that has h a d a few months primary study of scales and exercises. ” The numbers in t h e second program are slightly more difficult and should be attempted only after a few more months of study a n d practice. “ It is to be noted that quite often t h e melodies are incorporated in such secondary parts a s Horns, 2nd and 3rd Clarinets, 2nd a n d 3rd Trumpets, etc., making these parts more instructive a n d a t the same time more interesting. In preparing these arrangements, technical a n d rhythmical difficulties, as affecting the various instruments, have been taken into consideration a n d awkward fingerings, in particular, have been avoided as much as possible. ” Important parts a n d passages written for the individual instruments are all cued into t h e Conductor' s part, which is so arranged as t o be playable on the piano for demonstration if so desired.“ L E E M. Technical difficulties are present in sufficient degree t o extend the finest high school orchestras. T h e instrumentation includes second oboe, second bassoon, second horn a n d second trombone in addition t o t h e usual parts. L E E M. LOCKHART Pennant I. T h e content is less familiar than that of m o s t folio publications b u t in that very point hangs i t s usefulness. This rather awkward gap has been bridged exceedingly well b y Mr. Metcalf in his Transition B a n d Book. After one A suite in three well-contrasted parts, and of medium difficulty. T h e first part, “ Calinda” is a rhythmic t w o form movement. A syncopated character continues throughout with variety being given b y fine use of tone color. T h e second movement “ Theme and Variations” is in pleasing variety to the first. I t is a clear delightful use of variations on a given theme a n d is an acceptable contribution to high school orchestra music. T h e third part is rhythmic a n d strong. I t s title “ Humoresque” L E E M. LOCKHART characterizes it well. T h e numbers included in t h e first program are all of very easy grade a n d well within the capabilities of a band that has h a d a few months primary study of scales and exercises. ” The numbers in t h e second program are slightly more difficult and should be attempted only after a few more months of study a n d practice. “ It is to be noted that quite often t h e melodies are incorporated in such secondary parts a s Horns, 2nd and 3rd Clarinets, 2nd a n d 3rd Trumpets, etc., making these parts more instructive a n d a t the same time more interesting.
