Music for Young Children is one of a growing number of publications in the field of preschool music. This recent flurry of activity has been caused by the tremendous growth of public and private early childhood education programs in our country, by the recognition of the importance of early educational experiences in shaping the young child's development, and by an awareness among music educators that the preschool music area has great potential for scholarly research and writing. Happily, Vernice Nye, who has made many contributions to the field of elementary music education, has now added her expertise to preschool music education through Music for Young Children. The book is intended for teachers, prospective teachers, teacher-aides, and parents of children aged three to five. Its approach recognizes the particular value of music as an aesthetic experience dealing with affect and feeling and emphasizes the conceptual nature of the subject and how young children develop these concepts. Yet, the author never loses sight of the potential of music as an aid to all curriculum areas in the preschool. Indeed, nearly one-half the book is devoted to music in the integrated preschool curriculum. There is much of value in this book. Objectives based on music and human values are outlined, and suggestions on how to provide an environment for musical growth to meet these objectives are given. Specific recommendations on how to involve parents in the musical growth of their preschoolers are outlined. The author draws upon the work of Piaget, Kod-aly, Orff, Suzuki, Dalcroze, and Ca-rabo-Cone in presenting techniques to use in developing music concepts. There are excellent suggestions on how to develop singing, listening, instrumental, movement, and general creative skills with young children. Several helpful lesson plans are presented. Song, recording, and bibliographical lists abound and provide a rich source for other materials available in preschool music education. And most importantly, technical language and music notation are kept to a minimum, thus enabling even the teacher with little or no music training to utilize many of the suggestions offered. Currently there are no other books in the field of preschool music education that offer such an overview of the subject as Music for Young Children. It deserves a place in the library of every music educator interested in !
