<meta-value> Music SUPERVISORS JOURNAL Two Little Players at Two Pianos–E. Esther C. Benson. T h e Willis M u s i c C o., Cincinnati, Ohio. Five finger position two piano numbers, exceedingly easy, student a n d student, ensemble. N o s. and 6 are especially nice. SUSAN T. CANFIELD College and University Bands, L. V. B u c k ton. Teachers' College, Columbia University, N e w York. Mr. Buckton gives a report of statistical nature covering the organization and administration of college a n d university bands. Cost of uniforms, teaching, a n d maintainance, together with discussion of standards are among t h e items conL E E M. LOCKHART cerned i n the report. Holmes Band Book. Carl Fischer, I n c. T h e following quotation tells t h e whole story. It is extracted from t h e foreword of t h e publication: “ This little book has been written with t h e express purpose of providing two easy programs of seven numbers each. T h e numbers included in t h e first program are all of very easy grade a n d well within the capabilities of a band that has h a d a few months primary study of scales and exercises. ” The numbers in t h e second program are slightly more difficult and should be attempted only after a few more months of study a n d practice. “ It is to be noted that quite often t h e melodies are incorporated in such secondary parts a s Horns, 2nd and 3rd Clarinets, 2nd a n d 3rd Trumpets, etc., making these parts more instructive a n d a t the same time more interesting. In preparing these arrangements, technical a n d rhythmical difficulties, as affecting the various instruments, have been taken into consideration a n d awkward fingerings, in particular, have been avoided as much as possible. ” Important parts a n d passages written for the individual instruments are all cued into t h e Conductor' s part, which is so arranged as t o be playable on the piano for demonstration if so desired.“ L E E M. LOCKHART La Rumba, Co. Quinto Maganini. J. Fischer & This number, a Cuban Rhapsody, is an interesting s t u d y of the more unusual t y p e. Technical difficulties are present in sufficient degree t o extend the finest high school orchestras. T h e instrumentation includes second oboe, second bassoon, second horn a n d second trombone in addition t o t h e usual parts. L E E M. LOCKHART Pennant I. Folio, School Orchestra Series, Book Crawford M u s i c Corp., 1 4 5 W e s t 4 5 t h St., N e w York. J. W. F a y has selected seventeen pieces of merit and p u t t h e m in folio form. T h e content is less familiar than that of m o s t folio publications b u t in that very point hangs i t s usefulness. W e are glad t o welcome t h e Pennant Folio as an added richness given t o school music. T h e instrumentation is complete even t o saxophone parts. T h e treatment of each instrument is well conceived and executed. While t h e s e t is not strictly of beginning nature it is so p u t together that members of varying abilities m a y play together. T h e fourth violin part, for instance, deals entirely with open strings in the first t w o numbers, largely in the next few, and t o a satisfactory degree in those remaining. T h e second clarinet part uses only notes below B, third line. For simplicity of string work, several sharps are necessary in m a n y w i n d parts. L E E M. LOCKHART The Pilgrim, M. L. Lake. Carl Fischer, Inc. T h e Universal B a n d Library m a y boast of this late addition. T o o few grand marches are available for band and this gives us a very fine one. I t s best use would be for outside work where great pomp and majesty are t o be portrayed. T h e extensive brass strains are contrasted with flowing wood wind passages. Order U 1608. L E E M. LOCKHART Suite Creole, J. V a n Broekhoven. Fischer and C o m p a n y. J. Fillmore Transition Band Book, Leon V. Metcalf. Fillmore Music H o u s e. For a long time w e have needed a book which might take t h e band from its first unison work through t o our simple band books. This rather awkward gap has been bridged exceedingly well b y Mr. Metcalf in his Transition B a n d Book. After one A suite in three well-contrasted parts, and of medium difficulty. T h e first part, “ Calinda” is a rhythmic t w o form movement. A syncopated character continues throughout with variety being given b y fine use of tone color. T h e second movement “ Theme and Variations” is in pleasing variety to the first. I t is a clear delightful use of variations on a given theme a n d is an acceptable contribution to high school orchestra music. T h e third part is rhythmic a n d strong. I t s title “ Humoresque” L E E M. LOCKHART characterizes it well. START A SONG-O-PHONE SCHOOL BAND Children can “ PLAY AT ONCE” S O N G - O - P H O N E S develop healthy lungs and an ear for musical harmony in growing children. Will help monotones to sing Without study children can produce fine orchestral effects on these easy-played instruments. Practical for Kindergarten children or High School Boys and Girls. Hundreds of successful Song-O-Phone School Bands endorsed by Supervisors of Music and Boards of Education have won hearty approval, because of combining educational qualities with amusement, in accordance with the most modern principles of teaching. Send for catalog and make your selection. 20 different band instruments to choose from. 70c to $3.25 each. Safranek' s Guide to Harmony. Virtuoso M u s i c School, Buffalo, N e w York. Mr. Safranek h a s given t o us a clear condensed treatise on harmony. T h e publication i s constructed as a series of lessons, twenty-six in number. A n appendix gives solutions t o the practice exercises. Nothing is found t o which exception might be taken. AU in all I think i t would b e a satisfactory text for school use, but possessed of special value for the individual w h o m u s t learn without a teacher. L E E M. LOCKHART 548 Wythe Ave. THE SONOPHONE Dept. Y. Brooklyn,. Y. CO. Music SUPERVISORS JOURNAL 107 m o n t h of embouchure work a band can start t h e first number in this n e w publication. T h e music is w e l l graded from numbers one t o twenty-one. P l a ying problems are m e t with o n e b y one a n d in sensible order. A Conductor' s half score gives very clearly the work of all sections thereby eliminating all waste time in finding mistakes. Mr. Metcalf realizes that fast teaching can be done only when the teacher has at hand the problems of each part. LEE M. LOCKHART for Aural Observation. T h e teacher helps are potent and suggestive a n d if a n occasional setting of a poem is disappointing t h e balance is on the positive side. SUSAN T. CANFIELD Sing With Me–G. A. Grant-Schaefer. Arthur P. Schmidt C o., N e w York. A song journey through t h e alphabet from Afternoon t o Zebra with t h e Music-Man. A s usual t h e author' s harmonies a d d m u c h t o t h e melodies. M a n y of t h e songs are attractive. SUSAN T. CANFIELD The Music Hour in the Kindergarten and First Grade b y Osbourne, M c C o n a t h y, W Otto Miessner, Edward Bailey Birge, Mabel E. Bray. Silver, Burdett a n d Co. T h i s is t h e first complete recognition o n t h e part of educational music editors of t h e Kindergarten as an integral part of t h e school system a n d a definite a t t e m p t to m e e t its particular needs. There are in t h e Kindergarten part of t h e book 8 numbers for T o y Orchestra, each of which is good musically stimulating a desire for different t y p e s a n d gradations of sound; 12 numbers nicely chosen for R h y t h m Play; 9 beautiful passages from familiar compositions t o be played for “ Moods” a n d 10 charming excerpts from t h e masters for fairy music, forces of nature, etc. There is a nice correlation in these last t w o sections between the songs the children sing a n d t h e music t o which t h e y listen.
