Source Readings in Music Education History contains excerpted passages from the writings of politicians, religious thinkers, philosophers, and _,. musicians. It is Source in Music Education Michael Marks History intention to pro- ! vide the reader MichadUMaric with an overview, of the relationship between music education and the social, 1 political, religious, and artistic notions extant at various cutting points in history ranging from Plato to present-day society. The author suggests on the cover jacket that “music educators are constantly called upon to explain and justify their profession to the greater society that supports it.” He feels that history holds the rationale for this justification, and he cites the writings of fifty-six authors from which he draws eighty-seven readings to make his point. Mark writes in the preface (p. xii) that his selections were chosen “to provide the reader with an understanding of why music education is, and has been, a vitally important activity throughout the history of western culture.” The author asserts that his selected readings are not about aesthetics, but about philosophy of education as related to music and that his selected excerpts are intended to identify the reasons for the relationship between music education and society. Source Readings is divided into five sections, the first dealing with the ancient world. This includes the Athenian philosophers Plato, Aristotle, Epicurus, and Athenaeus. This section also includes the Roman thinkers Quintilian and St. Augustine. The Middle Ages marks the second section of the text with excerpts from the writings of Boethius and Charlemagne. The third portion of the book is more global in scope and is titled “Later European Views.” Section four, “American Views,” includes a wide range of authors together with excerpts from various symposia. The final portion of Source Readings is identified as “Music Education in Totalitarian States.” Four authors are cited in this section—Adolf Hitler, Josef Stalin, Nikita Krushchev, and Dmitri Shostakovich. A book of source readings can serve as useful adjunct reading for a course. Additionally, it can save the student precious time when searching for salient information about a particular topic. Mark has provided the music education profession with a worthwhile selection of excerpts that meet these two aims. The various readings will certainly stimulate students' thinking and help them focus on a certain historical flow of evolutionary thought. A word of caution should be mentioned concerning the logical flow of the selected excerpts. The only unifying format for the readings is the main headings of each main section of the text. The author provides a brief discussion before each section, but no attempt is made to draw any conceptual connection between or within the various sections. In some instances Mark chose to provide information about certain authors and none about others. He makes no attempt to analyze, synthesize, or discuss in any way the implications or relationships of his chosen excerpts or seek any identifiable pattern to the thinking of the authors. Source Readings is simply a compilation of excerpts selected for their apparent relevance to music education in society at various times throughout history. Mark's title, therefore, is misleading because the majority of his choices of readings have implications for the relationship of music education to society only from inferences drawn by the reader. He is 26 right to inform the reader in the preface (p. xii) that “not every reading is specifically concerned with music and/or music education_ The reader must make inferences about the role of music education_” This reviewer appreciates the fact that the author informs the reader that most of his readings are excerpts and that pursuit of any given work in its entirely will be a rewarding venture for the reader. It seems reasonable to assume, therefore, that Mark intended his book to be used as a resource text, and not necessarily one that should be read in a systematic way as might be done with a required book for a course of study.—Carroll Gonzo, professor of music, University of Texas at Austin </meta-value>
