<meta-value> Danziger Explains [Mr. Frodsham's letter] expresses only too well the frustration felt in so much of education. Solutions to our problems are not easy to come by, but it is reasonably certain they will not be found where Mr. Frodsham is looking. [He] is deeply concerned with the problem of the “drug culture” and its effect on the schools. So are we all. In New York City, drugs are a major problem in all high schools and even in some elementary schools. If he believes that this is in any way connected with the introduction of rock into the musical curricula of these schools, the facts will not bear him out. Few, tragically very few, schools in New York treat rock seriously as a style not only full of deep meaning for students, but with rhythmic and harmonic elements and basic forms akin to those we find in other, more “serious” styles. A few schools do, and they are making an important dent in the alienation between adult and child that is so much a part of the drug scene. A class in theory [may learn] to play a basic chord progression-say, I, IV, V, I-or one of the modal progressions that abound in rock. Does it diminish the musical mastery acquired when these chords are played on an electric organ by a teacher or older student improvising a rock pattern? Can we fault this method because the children actually enjoy playing harmonic progressions in such a context and learn much faster? The same class may be asked to listen to a recording of a familiar rock piece, one which they may have heard forty or fifty times. (The number of times children will listen to a piece they like is fantastic.) The teacher will point out a recurring phrase-a basso ostinato hidden away-which, very likely, they missed in spite of their many rehearings. Is it pedagogically unsound that later in the same hour A TOTALLT uoe OD AMPLI-CELESTE Start with the rich, crisp belltones of the Celeste - amplify and project them loud and clear-and you have the new sound excitement of the Musser Amplified Celeste. It is too bad that Mr. Frodsham chooses to misread the sense in which “hearing music on his mother's knee” was used and, in fact, passes over, as perhaps meaningless, the metaphorical use of the name McLuhan. Yet, that is the very crux of the matter. The child entering a classroom today is a qualitatively different being from any we have met in our teaching careers. The simple fact we must understand and face is that the important lessons he has learned at home are nothing compared to what he has absorbed from his radio or TV set. I have been a teacher for almost fifty years. For the past fifteen years, I have taught and supervised the teaching of music to underprivileged children on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Never in these years have children come for their first lesson with such pronounced musical preferences-call them prejudices, if you will-[as children today]. What is a teacher to do, faced with such students? Cluck, shake his head, and say, “Forget all that. I have something better for you? No better way has yet been devised for erecting a wall between teacher and student. When Mr. Frodsham writes, “The first order of music educators today is … to develop great teachers,” he may be saying much less than he thinks. How do we develop great teachers without training them to understand their pupils? And can this understanding be achieved when we seek to cut them off from the single most meaningful phase of their students' musical lives? We need not accept McLuhan hook, line, and sinker, but we must ponder the immense truth for teachers in his insight, “ the environment of popular culture (can be) their door to all past achievement -their path to tradition.” Each year, thousands of students, despairing of getting guidance and understanding from their teachers, turn to find their musical inspiration outside the school. It is there-without guidance and meaningful control- that drugs become a real problem. The fault lies not in rock, but in pedagogic myopia. It is high time we got off our tenured and endowed chairs to reach out to what gives our vocation its only meaning-the student, flawed but real.-Harris Danziger, President, National Guild of Community Music Schools, Inc., and Director, Third Street Music School Settlement, 55 East Third Street, New York City 10003. </meta-value>
