JAPANESE MUSIC of various styles and periods has been recorded on six LP records as part of UNESCO' S “ Musical Anthology of the Orient” collection. Each record comes in a folder containing an introduction and commentary, photographs of instruments, musicians, and dancers, and explanatory musical notations. The first record contains Sokyoku, compositions for the koto, a long zither with thirteen strings plucked with ivory plectra worn on the thumb, index, and middle fingers of the right hand. The music accompanies a cycle of songs or, sometimes, a scene from a play. Record II is of Gagaku, the orchestral court music of Japan, which is the oldest existing traditional music for orchestra in the world. The third record is of music that sprang up during the Edo Period (1603 to 1867), when Japan was voluntarily sealed off from the rest of the world. Bourgeois in character, the music served as vocal accompaniment for the Kabuki and Bunraku puppet theaters. Records IV and V are of religious music, made with special permission during liturgic services and ceremonies at monasteries and shrines. Record IV is of Buddhist music; Record V is devoted to Shinto music. The sixth record contains on one side a No choral drama and on the other chanting accompanied by the biwa, a member of the lute family. SOUL IS THE SUBJECT of A. B. Spellman' s Four Lives in the - Bebop Business, a musical biography of four jazz musicians. Ornette Coleman, Herbie Nichols, Jackie Mc Lean, and Cecil Taylor, though of widely different backgrounds, sh are d a dedication to jazz as the only music having any validity for them. Mr. Spellman tells of the difficulties and the tragedy of their espousal of an art with no support, no academic endorsement, and a very small audience. He maintains that “ the classical music of our times is jazz,” that jazz is “ what' s happening.” The 241-page book stands as an apologia for this often misunderstood art form.
