<meta-value> For Your Library Masterpieces of Music before 1750: An Anthology of Musical Examples from Gregorian Chant to J. S. Bach. Compiled and edited by Carl Parrish and John F. Ohl. Dover Publications, Inc. (31 East Second Street, Mineola, NY 11501; 516-742-5079; www.doverpublications.com), 2001. 248 pp. Music examples. Paperback, $14.95. Written for students of music history, this collection of music examples offers an overview of Western music from the early Middle Ages to the mid-1700s. Included are Latin, Italian, French, and German vocal works, as well as instrumental pieces and dances. Composers include Des Prez, Lassus, Palestrina, Byrd, Scarlatti, Handel, and Bach. Brief introductions to each work place the music in the context of its time and relate the piece to other works of the same era. Surrounding the Center: History and Aesthetics in Thai Buddhist Performance. By Deborah Wong. University of Chicago Press (Order Department, 11030 South Langley Avenue, Chicago, IL 60628; 800-621-2736 or 773-568-1550; www.press.uchicago.edu), 2001; 384 pp. Black-and-white photographs, notes, references, index; CD included. Hardcover, $52.00; paperback, $29.00. Part of the Chicago Studies in Ethnomusicology, this volume describes the fieldwork of Deborah Wong in Bangkok, the sacred center of Buddhist Thailand. In her examination of classical music and dance, Wong focuses on the tradition of honoring teachers of these specialties. Her study reveals a network of individuals who participate in and support the arts, including kings, wealthy families, teachers, performers, and spectators. Emphasized are the relationships (as demonstrated by music and dance) between the physical and spiritual worlds. Songs of the Women Trouveres. Edited, translated, and introduced by Eglal Doss-Quinby, Joan Tasker Grimbert, Wendy Pfeffer, and Elizabeth Aubrey. Yale University Press (PO Box 209040, New Haven, CT 06520-9040; www.yale.edu/yup/), 2001. 184 pp. Illustrations, music examples, bibliography, index. Hardcover, $40.00; paperback, $18.00. This anthology of women trouveres (poet-composers) of twelfth- and thirteenth-century northern France is of particular interest to students of music history and poetry. Refuting the notion that there are no Old French lyrics by women, the editors of this book present songs attributed to eight women trouveres. The collection includes Old French texts of seventy-five compositions, music for eighteen monophonic songs and nineteen polyphonic motets, English translations, and considerable background information about the period in which they were written. Temperament: The Idea That Solved Musics Greatest Riddle. By Stuart M. Isacoff Alfred A. Knopf (299 Park Avenue, New York, NY 10171; www.randomhouse.com), 2001; 264 pp. Illustrations, bibliography, index. Paperback, $23.00. From classical Greek times, musical creation was thought to be governed by immutable, divine, mathematical principles. Over time, these rules were called into question as innovators and traditionalists brought various ideas to bear on the problems of what constitutes beautiful music and how the tones of the scale 70 MUSIC EDUCATORS JOURNAL should be selected. This book follows the development of Western music to the eighteenth-century breakthrough that produced equal temperament and a keyboard that made possible the music of Liszt, Chopin, Brahms, Debussy, and those who came after them. The author follows the development of the piano and includes a discussion of social history, religion, science, and philosophy. McGraw-Hill has two recent releases of interest to music educators. The first, Music Every Day: Transforming the Elementary Classroom (2001, 416 pp., spiral-bound paperback, $53.13) by Carol P. Richardson and the late Betty W. Atterbury, to whom the book is dedicated, is designed to help prospective classroom educators at the elementary level become more at ease with teaching music. It explains the importance of elementary music education and offers an introduction to music fundamentals. The authors argue that music study can produce better listeners, who then tend to be more focused learners in other subjects. An audio CD ($20.00) with listening examples from a variety of genres and cultures is available to complement the book. The second publication, Teaching for Musical Understanding (2001, paperback, $43.75) by Jackie Wiggins, is an overview of the practice of music teaching. Says Wiggins in her preface, “Your capacity to be an effective music teacher is directly related to the extent of your own understanding of music and of the ways in which people learn music.” Wiggins believes that everything we know is directly REVITALIZE YOUR TEACHING at a 2002 Musikgarten Summer Workshop (FREE Spring Preview in each city) Atlanta, GA Boston, MA Charlotte, NC Chicago, IL Cincinnati, OH J Dallas, TX Denver, CO Ft.
