<meta-value> Floppy Discography by Robert W. Placek Program: Tuner: Intonation Drill Type: Drill-and-practice program permitting the stu- dent to adjust a tone's pitch with the object of deciding whether it is in tune with another given pitch. Intended skill level: Secondary or college, but conceivably for any student who wishes to practice matching pitch- Runs on: 48K Apple II, Il-h, He, lie Additional hardware: None. ALF synthesizer board optional. Rating: Attractive program affording effective intonation drill. Author: Don Pederson Publisher: CONDUIT, University of Iowa, Oakdale Campus, Iowa City, 52242 Price: $35.00. Includes one original and one backup disk. Tuner: Intonation Drill uses a straightforward strategy to provide students with the experience of matching tones with the computer and deciding when the tones are in tune. The student receives immediate feedback and the opportunity to try again and a summary evaluation of his or her last overall performance. The program sounds two pitches; the student presses “R” to raise or “L” to lower the second pitch to match the first, “P” to play the problem again, or the escape key to exit and receive a rating. A short tutorial-a little over a minute long-demonstrates how tones sound flat, sharp, or in tune and reviews instructions and commands. No judgment is made until the student presses “I” (for IN-TUNE). At this time the screen flashes with the word RIGHT, CLOSE, or ERROR and the program records the number correct, close, or in error; it also displays the number of problems involved and calculates a percentage score (see figure 1). On a color monitor, the RIGHT/ CLOSE/ERROR frame has a very bright and attractive appearance. One finds that pressing “R” about five times raises the tone a half-step; CLOSE, which is worth approximately half-credit, is given when the match is off by one key press. FLAT or SHARP flashes when the answer is not correct; the student is then asked to try the problem again. No additional scoring is given for the old problem, but when the player achieves RIGHT or CLOSE, a new problem is presented. Pressing “H,” for HELP, Robert W. Placek is associate professor at the School of Music, University of Georgia, Athens. 18 MEJ/February ‘86 Figure 1 branches the student to a review of the program's commands. The student may press the escape key at any time to exit the program and receive his rating. First a Summary of Performance appears-the only additional information consisting of a tally of number of pitches tuned flat or sharp (see figure 2). The next time a key is pressed, the student receives the rating. ACCEPTABLE is given for an 80-89 score; a short tune is played and the screen flashes briefly (in many colors if a color monitor is used). A score of 90-100 is EXCELLENT and the student is treated to a slightly longer “happy” tune and an even more impressive color display. A score of 79 or less receives “You need more work!!” and a short musical rendition of the “Dies Irae.” Ratings are based on percentages, and percentages are based on the number of problems the student chooses to try before pressing the escape key. Thus, the program is entirely student-controlled. Permanent records are not kept; however, an interested instructor could easily observe a student attempt a designated number of problems as a test of student ability to tune pitches. Tuner randomly selects a variety of middle-range pitches to be matched and seems an attractive package to assist any music student wishing to practice putting pitches in tune with computer assistance.
