<meta-value> Floppy Discography by Robert W. Placek University of Delaware Videodisc Music Series Type: Laserdisc supplying random access to performances of selected music with unique audiovisual options. Intended skill level: College music major or nonmajor; selective use with secondary or elementary school students. Runs on: Videodisc player connected to video monitor. Rating: A model of quality in terms of stereo sound fidelity, visual attractiveness, and manipulation of the unique capabilities of videodisc technology. Source: Office of Computer-Based Instruction, Videodisc Music Series, Academy and Main Streets, University of Delaware, Newark 19716. Price: $295; includes four two-sided videodiscs and two accompanying paperback volumes containing documentation, informative essays, and musical scores. Although it may seem strange to include the following product in a column about computer software, I have decided to do so because the University of Delaware's Videodisc Music Series represents a landmark in videodisc technology, particularly for the subject of music appreciation. Videodiscs are not “floppy,” but hard, each looking like a large compact disc with a shimmery silver finish. As instructional media, this series is similar to computer programs that can access Robert W. Placek is associate professor at the School of Music, University of Georgia, Athens. C* data and provide interesting audiovisual effects yet offer little in terms of teaching procedures. Planning for objectives, procedures, and evaluations remains to be done by the instructor. The Videodisc Music Series provides extensive documentation of its content and seems designed to appeal mostly to university-level students, though the scope of subject and attractive presentation may conceivably be used with students of almost any age. All this considered, any educational institution or interested individual possessing a videodisc player or the prospect of acquiring one should procure the Videodisc Music Series. These four, double-sided discs contain an enormous amount of audiovisual material that can be accessed almost instantly by chapter or frame identification. The package also contains two accompanying paperback volumes: Volume I, Analytic Essays and Documentation (with 330 pages) and Volume II, Anthology (with 260 pages of music). Besides the twelve masterworks that are performed and analyzed, there is a slide bank of almost two thousand slides that are beautiful to see and cross-referenced in a variety of ways (musicians, artists, countries, instruments, etc.). These are available on each disc side and can be accessed individually or by stepping through the slide bank selection in consecutive order. The program requires the user to have a laserdisc player (priced somewhat higher than comparable VHS players) and a color television playback unit. The instructor's remote control unit is similar to a VHS unit with fast forward, rewind, stop frame, and step motion. It also has several other features including buttons for chapter or frame, for search and play, and for digits zero through nine. The series is organized with indexes and subindexes that allow a person to move quickly (“branch”) to a designated “chapter” by simply selecting a chapter number and pressing the “search” button. Viewers are instantly moved to the selected chapter. In addition to branching to chapters on a disc side, designated frame branching is also available, allowing the user to go to individual frames by choosing a frame number. The first paperback volume contains thousands of references defining and categorizing frames and supplying each with an identifying five-digit number. There is a great deal of beautiful music to hear and beautiful pictures to see with this series. Some of the many selections include Haydn's Symphony No. 94 (“Surprise”), second movement; Mozart's Quintet for Clarinet and Strings, K.581, first movement; Dies Irae (Gregorian chant); and Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique, fifth movement. In order to create an impression of the series in operation, I will describe the content and organization of a composition on one disc side. The first side of the first disc presents some introductory material and then lists the main index. Here the viewer may choose to branch to one of three chapters (see figure 1). If the user selects the first (Mozart's Quintet for Clarinet and Strings, K.581), he or she is branched to chapter two in which a subindex lists the options of Main index, Performance, Scrolling score, Contour map, and Orna- .i -;.•/ t :L Figure 1 Figure 2 Figure 3 Protect your best teaching resource … with MEJ binders and cases. During the performance chapter, in which the quintet is heard and seen performing, the user can access video frames in the way previously described. The chapter number can be changed with the remote control unit (much like a television channel is changed) whenever a user decides to branch to another chapter (see figure 2). Chapter four allows the user to listen to music as its five-staff score with added chord symbols scrolls from right to left. The fifth chapter provides an interesting feature called a “color-coded contour map” (see figure 3). On a color screen it shows the first theme in red, second in yellow, third in green, fourth in blue, transition material in gray, and closing material in burgundy. The color code is used in a variety of imaginative ways throughout the series. Chapter six is a performance demonstration of selected clarinet ornaments in the piece, and chapter one returns to the main index. There are 54,000 references, points, or frames on each disc side to which the user can branch. The essays contain many interesting ideas for analyzing the series' music, documentation related to the location of frame and chapter, and storyboards that outline disc sides in neat columns. Still, pedagogies are not worked out in anything similar to a lesson plan, and the instructor must decide on sequence, supplementary content, timing, objectives, and the like. There is an opportunity to manipulate these materials into lesson form, which would include reference numbers for accessing specific frames and chapters. Finally, there remains the viable prospect of writing computer software that will allow interaction between computer, videodisc, and the students for whom the lessons are designed. With its high production quality and educational potential, Videodisc Music Series should serve to inspire increased use of videodisc technology in education. Discs of this quality may well motivate schools to acquire the equipment necessary for good educational use. </meta-value>
