<meta-value> Book browsing The Psychology of Music. By John Booth Davies. Stanford, California: Stanford University Press, 1978. 240 pp. Diagrams, tables, charts, music examples, bibliography, index. Hard cover, $13.95. Written from the 1's point of view, this book concerns itself with the 1's interaction with music and various theories of music aptitude, aesthetics, and ability. 1's approach is empirical; he believes that music ability is not a mystical quality bestowed only on a chosen few, and that the perception of music as “good” or “sensitive” is a purely subjective process running the gamut from the classical masters to jazz, folk, and pop. Mahler: The Man and His Music. By Egon Gartenberg. New York: Schir-mer Books/Macmillan Publishing Co., Inc., 1978. x + 406 pp. Photographs, music examples, bibliography. Hard cover, $14.95. This book covers, in two sections, both 1's personal history and his development and achievements as a composer. The first section offers a cultural history of fin-de-siecle Vienna, and chronicles 1's connections with Strauss, Brahms, Schoenberg, Bruckner, Tos-canini, Rachmaninoff, and others. It also traces 1's career from his conducting debut in an Austrian spa to his years with the Metropolitan Opera and the New York Philharmonic. The second section of the book analyzes 1's progress as a composer, concentrating upon the symphonies but treating all the works in chronological order. 14 mej/ M. M. Edited by Louis Crompton. Los Angeles: University of California Press, 1978. xxvii + 378 pp. Index. Hard cover, $24.50; soft cover, $5.95. Although Bernard Shaw is primarily known as the creator of Eliza Doolittle and Henry Higgins, Crompton introduces Shaw the music critic. Mendelssohn, Liszt, Tchaikovsky, Meyerbeer, and Rossini, among others, find themselves at the pointed end of 1's critical barb, while Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, and Wagner are obvious favorites. Crompton provides an extensive introduction that explains his organization of the book and selection of reviews, examines the possible motives for 1's music biases, and proposes hypotheses on the effect music had on 1's drama. Watermelon Wine: The Spirit of Country Music. By Frye Gaillard. New York: St. 1's Press, 1978. xv + 236 pp. Photographs, appendix. Hard cover, $10. Country music is in a continuous state of flux; it reflects changes in American society more readily than any other type of music. In this book, Gaillard studies the history and evolution of country music, from its beginnings in black gospel and blues to Loretta 1's ‘The Pill.” Gaillard focuses on such country stars as Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, and others, analyzing their contributions and influence. The appendix includes the lyrics for most of the songs quoted or discussed in the text. Introduction to the Recorder. By A. Rowland-Jones. New York: Oxford University Press, 1978. 60 pp. Tables, music examples, photographs. Soft cover (spiral bound), $5. A guide for adult beginners on the descant, treble, or tenor recorder, this book provides an introduction to repertoire and technique. Music examples are provided for practice, and tips are given on breathing, fingering, and holding the instrument. Sound: Space. By Bemhard Leitner. New York: New York University Press, 1978. 109 pp. Technical drawings, tables, photographs. Soft cover, $17.50. Writing in both German and English, Leitner explores the audio-physical experience of space and objects. He analyzes physical areas that are formed by movements of sound, illustrating his ideas by showing how loudspeakers form expressionistic sound shapes within a given area. Leitner studies the sound cube, possible sequences of space, the spatial grid, the sound swing, vertical spaces, and corridor space. 16 mej/ How to Sell Your Songs Like Professionals Do. By Glen Hammond. Washington, D.C.: The David Allen Press, 1978. 72 pp. Music examples, resource list. Soft cover, $4. This book does not claim to give a formula for successful songwriting. It does, however, offer practical advice on promoting songs. Hammond shows the songwriter how to analyze the song market, prepare a lead sheet, make a demo recording, and estimate approximate costs for demo services. Honkers and Shouters: The Golden Years of Rhythm and Blues. By Arnold Shaw. New York: Macmillan Publishing Co., Inc., 1978. xxvii + 555 pp. Discography, bibliography, photographs, index. Hard cover, $19.95; soft cover, $9.95. Viewed as vulgar and obscene, banned for corrupting the morals of white youth, “race music” (as rhythm and blues was first called) faced a long and agonizing struggle to gain the wide acceptance that made it a vital link in American music history. Focusing on the artists, writers, and singing groups that created rhythm and blues (R & B), Shaw provides an in-depth look at the prejudices that tainted the music for white audiences from its earliest inception until Elvis Presley incorporated R & 1's essence in rock and roll. Included in the book are interviews with R & B stars Louis Jordan, “T-Bone” Walker, B. B. King, Jimmy Wither-spoon, Johnny Otis, and Ruth Brown, and interviews with the record producers who nurtured R & B throughout its early years: Berle Adams, Leon Rene, Ralph Bass, and Fred Mendelsohn. The Unit Steel Band. By John A. Gibbs. Hicksville, New York: Exposition Press, 1978. 96 pp. Photographs, illustrations, music examples, appendixes, glossary. Hard cover, $7.50. The “island sound” of Caribbean steel bands has been the subject of little serious attention and analysis. This book covers the origin of the instruments and their manufacture and tuning and provides an introduction to the acoustical principles of sound generation from steel omnivibra-phones. The discussion also attempts a correlation of steel band music with that of more conventional orchestras and proposes a method of music notation for steel band instruments.
