Werner states in the preface, “As our world becomes smaller through mass communication and our ability to know more about music education throughout the world is heightened by studies such as this, we are able to develop a global view of the significance of music in education.” Gyorgy Ligeti. Rhythmic Gesture in Mozart. By Wye Jamison Allanbrook. Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1984. 396 pp. Music examples, index. Hard cover, $30.00. This book focuses on the concept of a vocabulary of characteristic gestures that both Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and his audiences recognized as associated with certain traits. The author seeks to demonstrate that Mozart selected rhythms and meters-especially of specific dances-for the various characters to express their natures. She challenges the view of Mozart's operas as plays of key and theme more abstract than those of his predecessors. The operas discussed are The Marriage of Figaro and Don Gio-vani. Johann Sebastian Bach. By Hannsdieter Wohlfarth. Philadelphia: Fortress Press, 1985. 116 pp. Photographs. Hard cover, $14.95. In this book on Johann Sebastian Bach, the author focuses much of his discussion on Bach's religious conviction. Bach considered both his sacred and secular composing, says the author, to be acts of worship. This book is richly illustrated, with over forty color plates. MasterTeacher: NadiaBoulanger. By Don G. Campbell. Washington, D.C.: The Pastoral Press, 1984. 154 pp. Photographs. Hard cover, $19.95. “Nothing is better than music. When it takes us out of time, it has done more than we have the right to hope for.” Nadia Boulanger is wonderfully quotable; in fact, one section of this four-part, large-format book is devoted to her words. It first offers reflections on Boulanger by her pupils and acquaintances (Virgil Thompson is quoted as saying, “She was a one-woman graduate school, so powerful and so permeating that legend credits every United States town with two things: a five and dime and a Boulanger 74 MEJ/April ‘85 pupil”). Other sections contains a biography and four essays (“Modern French Music,” “Debussy,” “Stravinsky,” and “Dissonance Is Today, Consonance Is Tomorrow”). The many black-and-white photographs follow Boulanger from when she was a young person of five to when she was a young person of ninety-two. The Origin and Development of Jazz. By Otto Werner. Dubuque, Iowa: Kendall/Hunt Publishing, 1984. 163 pp. Illustrations, music examples, photographs, index. Soft cover, $14.95. How can you write a book on the history of jazz and not get to Storyville until halfway through? First, by allowing entry to your subject to nonmusicians by explaining the musical terms they must encounter. Second, by carefully surrounding Dixieland and New Orleans jazz with the popular and folk music that influenced it: African folk songs, work songs, the blues, and ragtime. Throughout, the focus of this book is more on the changing milieu of jazz than on in-depth musical analysis (though there are many music examples). The author gears his information to the needs of the new-to-jazz reader. </meta-value>
