<meta-value> Awards and Competitions CHARLES B. MADDEN, JR., has won $400 in the Texas Boys Choir's national composers competition for his Hear Us, written for treble choir and brass. Mr. Madden attends Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah. PIANO COMPETITION. The Friday Morning Music Club Foundation of Washington, D.C., has announced its sixteenth annual National Audition for pianists to be held May 9-10, 1969. Contestants, who must be sixteen to twenty-three years old, will compete for prizes of $1,000 plus a Phillips Collection recital, $750, and $500. Applications, accompanied by a taped performance, must be submitted by March 1, 1969. For further information, write Mrs. Willa Mae Kelly Koehn, Director, FMMC Foundation, 1649 K Street N. CLAUDETTE SOREL, concert pianist, was presented a citation by the National Association for American Conductors and Composers in recognition of her outstanding service for American music. ORGAN AND BRASS COMPOSERS have been invited to submit manuscripts by May 1, 1969, to a composition contest sponsored by the Philadelphia Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. The winner will receive $1,000 in cash and a premiere performance of his work at a public concert. For information on preparing manuscripts, write Philadelphia A.G.O. DEADLINE DATES in the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation's annual search for prospective college teachers have been advanced to October 20, 1968, for nominations and November 15, 1968, for the filing of all required documents. This program is designed to call the attention of graduate departments to students who anticipate a career in college teaching and are worthy of financial support. A candidate for Wood-row Wilson Designation must be nominated by a faculty member of his undergraduate college. The foundation will then invite the nominee to enter the competition. OCTOBER, NINETEEN SIXTY-EIGHT POLISH COMPOSER HONORED. Witold Lutoslawski won the main award at the fifteenth International Rostrum of Composers, May 20-25, 1968, for his Symphony No. 2. The International Rostrum, which is made up of broadcasting organizations, undertakes to have each of its members broadcast at least six of the works that are submitted during the year. During 1967-1968, seventy-eight compositions submitted to the rostrum were performed on the air more than 550 times. BACH AUDITIONS WINNERS. First prize in the seventh auditions of the Johann Sebastian Bach International Competitions in Washington, D.C, was won by twenty-three-year-old Mari-Eliza-beth Morgen of Toronto, Canada, in May 1968. The single test piece was Bach's Goldberg Variations. The award carries with it a cash prize of $1,000, a one-year music scholarship in West Germany, and contracts for solo recitals. AMERICAN- SCANDINAVIAN GRANT. Robert Arnold Karlen, assistant professor of music at Augsburg College, Minneapolis, Minnesota, has received a grant from the American-Scandinavian Foundation to study contemporary Scandinavian music and pre-Baroque works in music centers of the five Nordic countries in 1968-1969. FULBRIGHT GRANTS for advanced music study have been received by the following people: Victor Gebauer of the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, will study church music during the 1968-1969 academic year at the Free University of West Berlin; Bruno Nettl of the University of Illinois, Urbana, will visit Iran to study the techniques of improvisation in Middle-Eastern music and the social role of traditional music in a country that is rapidly becoming Westernized; John Ringgold of the Immaculate Heart College, Los Angeles, California, will study in Paris for a year to write his dissertation, “The Sources of Polyphony in the Music of Debussy.” ARTHUR FRACKENPOHL, professor of music and composer-in-residence in the Crane Department of Music, The State University College, Potsdam, New York, has been awarded an honorable mention for his congregational anthem, Sing Unto the Lord, in the music contest of the Tenth Annual Rochester (New York) Festival of Religious Arts. ? These 14 composers are winners in the 16th annual Student Composers Awards (SCA) competition. The awards are presented for original concert music and sponsored annually by Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI), an organization which licenses the performing rights of music. This year's winners, aged from 14 to 25, will share a total of $10,000 to be applied toward their musical education. The SCA project was established in 1951 by BMI in cooperation with music educators and composers. It makes annual cash awards to student composers of the Western Hemisphere who are under the age of 26. Thus far, 130 have shared in the awards. Prizes totaling $11,200 will be available for distribution in the 1968 competition. Complete entry kits are available upon request. Harley Gaber, 24, of New York, N.Y. studying privately with William Sydeman 20 MUSIC EDUCATORS JOURNAL ABA AWARD. The highest award of the American Bandmasters Association, The Edwin Franko Goldman Memorial Citation, was presented to Colonel Lau-reano G. Carino, for thirty years commanding officer and conductor of the General Headquarters Band of the Philippine Army, during his visit to the University of Miami Summer Music Camp. The citation was given in recognition of Colonel Carino's work in bringing American band music to the people of the Philippines. PAUL SCHENLEY, a piano student and senior in the Cleveland, Ohio, Institute of Music, has received first prize of $1,000 in the 1968 National Competition of the Young Musicians Foundation. FREEDOMS FOUNDATION AWARD. Lt. Colonel Samuel R. Laboda, leader and Commanding Officer of the United States Army Band received the Annual Distinguished National Recognition Award of The Freedoms Foundation of Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, during an appearance of the band at Carnegie Hall in New York City, February 22, 1968. Colonel Laboda was honored for his outstanding contributions to the field of music. STEPHEN F. DEUTSCH has won the seventh Paul Masson Award for Music Composition. The award is given for the encouragement and recognition of music students at San Francisco State College. Deutsch, a graduate student at San Francisco State, won the award primarily for a quintet composed in 1967. MUSIC THERAPY STIPENDS have been given to four students by the National Federation of Music Clubs. The Dorothy Dann Bullock Music Therapy Scholarship for 1968-1969 was awarded to Frederick E. Germani, New Castle, Pennsylvania. An award renewal was given to Susan Drost, Dearborn, Michigan, for a second year of study. Two additional music therapy scholarships of $250 each were given to Ann Vigo, Wau-sau, Wisconsin, and Dewelyn J. Heeb, San Carlos, California. BOURNE COMPANY, New York City music publishers, has been awarded two Paul Revere Awards for graphic excellence by the Music Publishers' Association. First prize for folios was given for Folk Guitar for Children, and honorable mention for folios was awarded for An Introduction to Pianistic Styles. RADIO STATION WEFM, Chicago, Illinois, has been awarded a certificate of merit by the Armstrong Memorial Research Foundation, honoring Arrand Parsons' weekly program “Chicago Symphony Notebook.” Mr. Parsons, a professor of music at Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, discusses upcoming concerts of the Chicago Symphony on the program. NEW JAZZ CHAMPIONS. One hundred and sixty-five musicians and singers took part in the three-day 1968 Intercollegiate Jazz Festival in the Kiel Opera House, St. Louis, Missouri, on June 22, 1968, to choose the new champions of collegiate jazz. The winners were the University of Illinois Jazz Band, Urbana, directed by John Garvey; the Jac Murphy Trio, Southern Methodist University, Dallas, Texas; and the Burgundy Street Singers, Kansas State University, Manhattan. </meta-value>
