A scholarly and in-depth examination of Bach's vocal works, this study concentrates on the composer's handwritten scores to determine the stages of his creative process. By identifying and interpreting changes that occur from one autograph version to another, the author theorizes about the technical and aesthetic considerations that prompted the various alterations. Photographic plates of music manuscripts serve as a twelve-page introduction to Rubio's scholarly, annotated examination of polyphonic music forms. A reprint of the original 1855 edition, this anthology contains a variety of folksongs by John McCurry and others who lived in Hart County, Georgia. McCurry designed his collection for use in singing schools as well as churches, and prefatory sections on “the rudiments of music” and the “art of musical composition” are of particular interest.
