<meta-value> Book Browsing Music in the Age of Chaucer. By Nigel Wilkins. Totowa, New Jersey: Rowman and Littlefield, 1980. xiv + 174 pp. Photographs, music examples, bibliographic notes, index. Hard cover, $35. Using Chaucer's poetry as a guide, this book examines the music traditions of France, Italy, and Britain during the fourteenth century. Although Chaucer himself was not a musician, many of his poems are based on French models that are patterned after a well-established music tradition, and there are many references to music in his poetry. The author uses these to explore the relationship between music and literature of the time, with emphasis on such composers as Machaut and Landini. The last two chapters in the book deal with minstrels, their performances, and instruments of the time. A performing edition is planned as an accompanying volume. The publisher's address is 81 Adams Drive, Totowa, New Jersey 07512. Richard Wagner's Music Dramas. By Carl Dahlhaus. Translated by Mary Whittall. New York: Cambridge University Press, 1979. 161 pp. Music examples. Hard cover, $12.95. The author dismisses the assumption that Wagner's works were autobiographical and instead attempts to show the dominant features of music drama evident in the composer's output. Each chapter is devoted to a specific work. The author begins by explaining the plot of the opera and citing the sources that Wagner used. He explains the circumstances under which Wagner wrote and then examines particular passages of the music. Sing a Rainbow. By David Ward. New York: Oxford University Press, 1980. 60 pp. Music examples, song list. Soft cover, $8.95. The three sections of this book discuss appropriate music activities for mentally handicapped children and their effectiveness in helping the children develop listening and language skills, physical coordination, and general awareness. The first section describes the activities and methods of incorporating them into the classroom, while the second section discusses the nature of music. The final section presents additional songs that can be used. Rodgers and Hammerstein Fact Book. Edited by Stanley Green. New York: The Lynn Farnol Group, Inc., 1979. 762 pp. Photographs. Soft cover, $17.95. Originally conceived and published as a research tool for distribution to libraries and educational institutions, this book is a revision of the 1968 edition. The book cites works that the two musicians composed together, as well as their separate works. Casts, credits, and songs are listed for every stage, film, and television musical written by Rodgers or Hammerstein, along with both favorable and unfavorable reviews. Also included are sections that list songs interpolated in shows or film, songs written independently of any shows or films, newspaper and magazine articles, a discography, and other statistical information. A thirty-two page final section of the book lists Rodgers' and Hammerstein's songs according to categories. The publisher's address is 104 East Seventy-eighth Street, New York 10021. Bloomington, Indiana: Indiana University Press, 1979. x + 267 pp. Photographs, dis-cography, index. Hard cover, $12.50. This biography chronicles the lifetime of conducting that has made Robert Shaw an institution in American music. The founder of three amateur choruses, Shaw can be said to have professionalized the choral tradition in America. This book also documents his influence on the community orchestra, the recording industry, live radio broadcasts, and on the recognition of twentieth-century American composers. The final part of the book describes the South's reentry into American musical life and reports on Shaw's attempts to propagate a “musical performance society’ in Atlanta. My Own Trumpet. Hard cover, $7.50. Written with the hope of ending confusion over imprecise metric notation, this book discusses both avant-garde and traditional notation of rhythm, specifically meter. Citing the two major reasons for confusion as ambiguous terminology of note values and misconceptions regarding the function of the barline, the author draws upon works from such diverse composers as Bach, Chopin, Debussy, and Bartok to illustrate his suggested solutions. Specific discussions include the principles of rhythm; meter; note value; rests, beams, and flags; and metric signatures.
