(Boston: Allyn and Bacon, Inc.), 1963. 404 pp. $7.25. "This is a methods book," says the author in his Preface. "It deals with music teaching in the junior and senior high music and other music schools-general classes, choral music, and instrumental nmusic." Mr. Singleton's methods book tends to be more thorough in treatment of the three major phases of secondary school music than similar publications of the past two decades. He devotes 128 pages to a solid and thoughtful discussion of general music. Similarly, 106 pages are given over to choral rehearsals, performance, organization, and activities; 112 pages to instrumental music under the sub-titles "Establishing the Program," "Teachina Advanced Players," "Administering the Program." An introductory section provides a brief overview of the general structure of public education, an historical sketch of secondary school music, and an excellent presentation of the nature of the secondary school pupil. A closing chapter entitled "A Philosophy of Music Education" purports to take a brief look into the future. All this is ably written and clear in presentation. It defends past accom- plishments and builds on what has been done with major emphasis, perhaps, on practices in music teaching along the Atlantic seaboard. Still, if one is at all conversant with the changes in process of activation in secondary schools, changes which have had a particular impetus during the past decade, Mr. Singleton's music methods may appear to be a bit limited. Fundamental and basic changes are taking place in the teaching of basic secondary school subjects, the introduction of revolutionary new approaches to learning are proceeding apace, and radical alterations are being initiated in scheduling and programming of instruction. We find little reflection of these movements within the present text. One will find over the country as a whole considerable attention being given to expansion of content courses in music-in theory, music history and literatture, in courses in orientation to the arts. Mr. Singleton, aside from discussion of elements of these as part of general music, makes no mention of what he calls "other music classes." Curriculum discussion is limited almost exclumusic, sively to the big three-general choral music, instrumental music. Still, in spite of some major shortcoming in adequate coverage of its topic, the text has much to recommend it in clarity and in thoroughness of treatment of "the big three." Any shortcoming in breadth can be rectified by the discerning instructor. MASTERS AND MASTERPIECES OF MUSIC. By R. G. Carter. (Altrincham, England: John Sherratt & Son), 1960. 136 pp. 12s. 6d. (approx. $1.75). The author, who is County Music Organiser for Cheshire in England, has selected 15 best-known composers, ranging from Henry Purcell to Claude Debussy, and describes the life of each, with special emphasis on the c0mposer's youth. Liberally illustrated, the text outlines one or more of the composer's masterpieces with extracts from some of their melodies. In this way the life of each master is listed with his work, thus making both become better understood by the 10 to 14 age group that the book was written for. In addition to the chapters on the composers, the book has a chapter on "Listening to the Music" and a list of musical terms and explanatory notes. IN PRAISE OF MUSIC. Edited by Richard Lewis. (New York: The Orion Press, Inc.), 1963. 126 pp. $4.95. Reeds a reason with for best! being Selmer reeds are made in France by the makers of Selmer (Paris) instruments-craftsmen with a 75-year reputation for knowing what the finest musicians demand in their instruments. This is the knowledge behind Selmer Soloist reeds -a background of skill and experience in research and manufacture no other reed can match-and the reason why you can rely on Soloist reeds to bring out the very best in your playing. Give your talent the full measure of assistance only a genuine French reed offers-play Selmer Soloist reeds. On sale at better music stores everywhere-Distributed by H. & A. SEL1ER INC. Elkhart. Indiana Here is a handsome book that shows taste and discrimination on the parts of the editor, the typographer, and the publisher. Liberally illustrated, every page is a visual delight. Mr. Lewis has divided his book into four sections: "Thoughts, Maxims and Speculations"; "The Personal Note"; "The Composer Speaks"; and "The Poet Speaks". The world's greatest thinkers as well as musicians are represented on the pages that indeed praise the art of music. Any person who is close to music as an art would enjoy this book; it could prove practically indispensable to a writer or lecturer on music. MUSIC EDUCATORS JOURNAL 142 </meta-value>
