<meta-value> Index to Record and Tape Reviews: A Classical Music Buying Guide, 1977. By Antoinette O. Maleady. San An-selmo, California: Chulainn Press, 1978. xi + 732 pp. Hard cover, $42.50. Citing reviews from thirty-seven music and review journals from Canada, Great Britain, and the United States, this seventh annual edition of the Index serves as a source guide for reviews of classical music on discs, tapes, and cassettes released during 1977. The book is organized in four sections. The first listing is by composer; the second covers music in collections (several composers per recording) and is alphabetized according to label; section three lists anonymous works; and section four is a performer index. All entries in sections two to four are cross-referenced with section one. Each primary entry lists the composer, all the works on the recording, catalog numbers, performers, label with disc and tape numbers, variant labels and numbers, and reissues with labels and numbers. Each review entry gives the magazine in which the review appears, the location of the review, and the evaluator's overall impression of the recording. The publisher's address is 1040 Butterfield Road, P.O. Box 770, San Anselmo, California 94960. “The Master Musicians Series.” Bartok by Lajos Lesznai; Beethoven by Marion M. Soft cover, $7.95 (prepaid), $8.95 (billed copies). Half of all undergraduate college students leave school before graduating. Eighty-five percent of these students go back again. They leave school to work, travel, study, volunteer, or get away- they are “stopouts.” Although this book includes no music-related programs for the stopout student, it does provide a nationwide selection of where students can find intern programs that will help them gain experience in the fields of art, communication, education, environment, government, health, consumer protection, religion, women's issues, and in minority organizations. Each entry details the particular organization's goals, internships available, academic requirements, length of the internship, salary or credit offered, and who to contact for an interview or application. Cranbury, New Jersey: Fairleigh Dickinson University Press, 1978. 147 pp. Music examples, notes, bibliography, index. Hard cover, $11.50. In this critical study, Stevens examines Monteverdi's music categorically rather than chronologically, dividing the music into three areas: secular vocal music, religious music, and music for the stage. Stevens studies not only Monteverdi's extant works but also focuses on lost works in an effort to give a more complete view of the composer's oeuvre. The author has taken particular care to use modern sources and provide references to available editions of scores. Setting the Stage for Learning: Humanistic Education; How and Why. By Leon C. Karel. Kirksville, Missouri: Simpson Publishing Company, 1978. xii + 79 pp. Soft cover, $3. This book “endeavors to sort out and clarify many of the conflicting ideas now prevalent about interrelating the arts.” It is written for educators and administrators who have questions relating to the humanities as a single course incorporating music, art, and literature. Karel discusses the necessity for multifaceted arts programs, aspects of teaching and learning in the humanities, and the way that the humanities relate to life after a person leaves the classroom. He presents various theories of arts education and suggests how to teach an integrated arts course at various grade levels. The publisher's address is 201 East Illinois, Kirksville, Missouri 63501. 98 mej/dec 78 The Pianoforte. By William Leslie Sumner. New York: St. Martin's Press, 1978. 223 pp. Photographs, tables, charts, diagrams, appendix, bibliography, index. Hard cover, $10.95. Now published for the first time in the United States, this volume details all aspects of the piano-its history, construction, acoustics, and aesthetics. The book provides historical sketches of outstanding piano builders such as Steinway, Bosendorfer, and Broadwood. The opinions of Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, Schubert, and others on the piano and its sound are quoted. A final chapter details the evolution of keyboard technique, discussing such theoreticians as Clementi, Czerny, Deppe, Leschetizky, Matthay, and Varo. Challenges in Piano Teaching: One-to-One Lessons for the Handicapped. By Sidney J. Lawrence. Hewlett, New York: Workshop Music Teaching Publications, 1978. 118 pp. Music examples, glossary, bibliography. Hard cover, $8.75. Using eleven case histories, Lawrence details the technique he has used in teaching piano to children who have perceptual dysfunction or are hyperkinetic, hyperactive, retarded, or physically handicapped. He discusses these various types of dysfunction and explains what specific medical terms should mean to the music educator. The publisher's address is 315 Mill Road, Hewlett, New York 11557. Cavalli. By Jane Glover. New York: St. Martin's Press, 1978. 191 pp. Music examples, notes, tables, photographs, appendixes, bibliography, index. Hard cover, $16.50. Beginning this well-documented book with a brief but comprehensive biography of Cavalli's life, Glover expands her study to include the composer's librettos, operas, and sacred music. Throughout her study, Glover endeavors to place the composer's work historically, relating his works to the external forces that helped shape his music. She explores the sources for Cavalli's operas, his methods of composition, his characterizations, and his orchestration and choral writing. Creative Musical Encounters. By Harold Zabrack. New York: Kenyon Publications, 1978. 75 pp. Music examples, tables. Soft cover, $3.50. Zabrack uses music by Bach, Chopin, and Brahms to illustrate his studies on performance and score analysis in this collection of seven articles on music interpretation. He also conducts a “psycho-physical” inquiry into the development of individual piano technique, and ends with an evaluation of twentieth-century music. </meta-value>
