<meta-value> BOOK BROWSING Hawaiian Music: An Annotated Bibliography. Compiled by Brian C. Stoneburner. Westport, Connecticut: Greenwood, 1986. 100 pp. Appendixes. Hardcover, $29.95. Developed as a tool for scholars and teachers of ethnomusicology as well as music librarians, this comprehensive volume contains more than five hundred annotated listings on Hawaiian music, musicians, and musical life. It contains sources in English, French, Spanish, and German from 1831 to 1985. Included are monographs, dissertations, theses, articles from periodicals and anthologies, pamphlets, unpublished papers, and record reviews. Both critical and historical writings are cited, and entries are arranged alphabetically by author or title. This book differs from previous efforts in that it contains many more entries on topics such as musical genres, styles, instruments, performers, composers, and individual songs. The compiler has provided appendixes on Hawaiian terminology and the location of periodicals referred to in the text. Making Music. Arthur Paxton. New York: Atheneum, 1986. 49 pp. Photographs. Hardcover, $11.95. Written to tell children the story of how music is created, produced, and eventually performed, this book uses simple text and evoca- 58 MEJ/February 87 tive black-and-white photographs to convey the excitement of translating musical ideas into reality. Each step of the process is pictured, using as a model American composer-conductor David Amran. The author, who holds a doctorate in music composition and is also a professional photographer, has selected scenes that show the extent to which music is the result of the combined efforts of many individuals working toward a common (and often uncommon) goal. The story is a useful preparation for children attending a classical concert. The Book of Classical Music Lists. By Herbert Kupferberg. New York: Facts on File Publications, 1986. 252 pp. Hardcover, $17.95. This book is an unusual collection of more than a hundred lists of diverse classical music subjects. A music and trivia lover's delight, it includes such hard-to-find information as all the operas ever performed at New York's Metropolitan, the names of all of Johann Sebastian Bach's twenty children in chronological order, the number of amorous conquests of Don Giovanni (listed by country), and a list of black musicians of renown prior to the twentieth century. Entertaining entries include “Happily and Unhappily Married Composers,” translations into English of composers names (Michael Praetorius = Mike Judge; Bedfich Smetana = Fred Sourcream), and golden rules of various composers offering advice to young musicians. Of interest to music historians are categories like “Musical Epochs and Their Composers,” “Operatic Schools,” and “Musicians Who Escaped the Nazis.” The section on “Forms and Instruments” provides a great deal of factual information on subjects like the seven ancient Greek modes, note values in seven Western languages, the etymology of names of musical instruments, and the numbers and types of instruments in orchestras of various periods in history. The sheer number and variety of facts and figures in this book make it a useful as well as amusing reference. Super Sight-Reading Secrets, revised third edition. By Howard Richman. That's why Meisel violins, violas, cellos, and basses combine the finest craftsmanship with the most detailed setup procedures in the industry. Our skilled hands inspect and adjust every bridge, peg, soundpost and fingerboard, so the instrument is ready for young hands, right out of the case. And, we've been doing it this way since 1878. In addition, Meisel chrome steel strings offer a wide selection of scale lengths, so there's sure to be a set that's perfect for any instrument. From our hands comes the finest old world quality. From their hands comes a bright new world of music. J* examples, drills. Paperback, $9.95. According to Howard Richman, each of us has an innate ability in at least one aspect of music. To become successful musically, we must discover ways to boost other skills artificially until they, too, become “natural.” Encouraging readers not to dwell on mistakes, Rich-man charts a course through some keyboard fundamentals, teaching mnemonic devices for remembering notes on the staff, tips for efficient fingering, and rhythm practices. Sight-reading technique is broken down into manageable components that are easy to master individually. (As in learning any new skill, fifteen minutes practice per day is preferred to two hours once a week.) Many drills for individual study are included. The method, although written for keyboard study, is adaptable to other instruments. Schoenberg and His Circle: A Viennese Portrait. By Joan Allen Smith. New York: Schirmer, 1986. 319 pp. Hardcover, $24.95. In this profile of Arnold Schoenberg based on interviews with contemporaries and documents of the period, author/reporter Joan Allen Smith recreates the intellectual atmosphere of turn-of-the-century Vienna. In the early 1900s, the city was the home of Sigmund Freud, philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein, and Gustav Mahler, as well as a number of Schoenberg's friends: architect Adolf Loos, painter Oskar Kokosch-ka, and critic Karl Kraus, each of whom appears to have exerted an influence on his music. Four facets of Schoenberg's life are covered: his cultural surroundings, his involvement with performance, his teaching, and the evolution of his twelve-tone method. Smith also discusses the composer's life after the announcement of this technique, which greatly affected twentieth-century music. Schoenberg immigrated to the United States when it became apparent that Hitler's Nazi party would come into power. The group of artists, writers, and intellectuals portrayed in the book bequeathed us modernism. The reader comes away with a broader under- 60 MEJ/February 87 standing of modern music and sensibility. 1987 Music Teachers Appointment Book. Virginia Newsome and Clarence N. Blake. Miami, Florida: Bellwin Mills, 1986. 258 pp. Illustrations, spiral-bound paperback, $9.95. An informative appointment/ address book for the professional music teacher, musician, or music lover, this 7” x 10” volume is filled with unusual quotes, musical facts, musicians' birthdates and places, and other trivia to entertain the reader. Supplementary sections include a daily lesson listing, a selected performance glossary, and a music competition list for both the United States and Canada with information on eligibility, categories, deadlines, awards, and addresses. Black-and-white illustrations complement a highly readable text and a key signature chart rounds out this useful and amusing scheduling tool. Sitting In: Selected Writings on Jazz, Blues and Related Topics. By Hayden Carruth. Iowa City, Iowa: University of Iowa Press, 1986. 204 pp. Hardcover, $22.50. Poet and critic Hayden Carruth is one of jazz's most careful listeners. He observes these arts both as a listener and a philosopher, witnessing the “astonishing eruption of both individual and communal genius” afforded America by a singular group of highly devoted musicians. The book is a collection of poems, short essays and musings, on the subjects of jazz, esthetic experience, art, and the question of ethnic Afro-American culture in the context of the larger North America civilization. Also explored are the origin of the blues, the formal idea of jazz, and the works of such musicians as Pee Wee Russell and Ben Webster. Carruth concerns himself with the influence of jazz on our writing and culture, and touches on the subject of the artistic imagination in general. Written with affection and insight, the book looks at the critical importance of spontaneity, the nature of the blues scale, what expressiveness means, and types of fraud that can damage our receptivity to music and language. In the preface of this book, Andre Previn says of Aaron Copland, “He is a great man, and no one connected with music can be anything but grateful for his presence.” One of the twentieth century's most distinguished and popular composers, Copland has long been admired both in the United States and abroad, and has won the acclaim of musicologists and music lovers alike. Born in 1900 in Brooklyn, where he began his musical career, he moved to Paris in the 1920s. At the end of that decade he returned to the United States, where he began to produce a series of works that could leave no doubt that American composers were capable of producing music equal to that of their European counterparts. But-terworth's chronological survey of Copland's entire output is the first to appear in thirty years, during which time Copland has written some of his most important works. Copiously illustrated with music examples, the volume includes an interview with the composer on the subject of his piano music, as well as a number of excellent photographs. Opera Today. Meirion and Susie Harries. New York: St. Martin's, 1986. 328 pp. Hardcover, $19.95. Opera is one of the most complex and glamorous of all performing arts. This in-depth look at the art form gives the reader an overview of the total effort involved in today's productions and the people who create them. Hundreds of people and hours are necessary to realize a single evening's entertainment, and it is seemingly miraculous that any opera ever reaches the public: the financial investment is colossal, the logistical challenges staggering, and the interplay of creative personalities often precarious. Opera Today examines in turn such critical elements as administration, singer, conductor, producer or director, designer, and composer. The authors interview leading practitioners in each category who discuss opera companies from Venice to St. Louis. The book presents a well-rounded look at the current 62 MEJ/February 87 opera scene, accompanied by numerous superb black-and-white photographs. American Oratorios and Cantatas: A Catalog of Works Written in the United States from Colonial Times to 1985. By Thurston J. Dox. Metuchen, New Jersey: Scarecrow, 1986. 1,330 pp., two vols. Hardcover, $97.50. A useful reference for both choral conductors and historians of American music, this two-volume catalog lists 3,450 choral works by over 1,000 composers. Included is basic “title-page” information for each work: length, description of necessary performing forces, and location of the score. Occasional comments about the composers themselves are a helpful added feature. Both sacred and secular works are listed, and the catalog is divided into four major sections: oratorios, choral cantatas, ensemble cantatas, and choral theater. Access to the entries is facilitated by title, composer, date and topical indexes. Many of the listings have never been published, making this catalog the first dealing with large choral works written in the United States. The book contains a large number of entries on choral theater. Much of the information on unpublished works has been heretofore unavailable, and the reviews, especially of nineteenth-century works, offer valuable insights for performance and research. Current addresses for publishers and composers and a bibliography complete this effort. Skeletons from the Opera Closet. David Groover and C. C. Conner. New York, St. Martin's, 1986. 250 pp. Hardcover, $15.95. Subtitled “An Irreverent Appreciation,” this book for the opera triviaphile with a sense of humor is both appreciative and unforgiving. In a series of amusing anecdotes, the authors reveal some of the worst that opera has to offer, as well as some of its least-appreciated gems. Lost treasures (some perhaps better left buried) are included, along with such information as “who was the fattest soprano?” The book offers a list of rare recordings and overrated singers, commentaries by composers of each other (Bizet on Verdi: “He lacks style.), and a guide to opera scenes that one could safely miss.
