In a postscript entitled “Wagner: For and Against,” Taylor presents the writings of Wagner's contemporaries and students discussing the composer's often unorthodox beliefs. Included in this postscript are commentaries by Hanslick, Nietzsche, Tolstoy, Shaw, Debussy, Thomas Mann, Bruno Walter, Stravinsky, Theodor W. New York: Cambridge University Press, 1978. Volume 1: xxiii + 327 pp. Volume 2: x + 325 pp. Photographs, indexes, bibliographies, notes, chronology, appendixes, list of works and correspondence. Hard cover, $23.50 each; two-volume set, $39-50. It has been nearly 100 years since Richard Wagner died in Venice; the Wagner archives are being opened and much new material about the composer and his family has come to light. In this two-volume biography, Westernhagen has availed himself of recently released information to present a well-documented survey of Wagner's life. Starting with a history of the composer's family, Westernhagen discounts the theory that Ludwig Geyer was Wagner's natural father. The author reexamines Wagner's relationship with Co-sima by using the “Brown Book,” a private diary Wagner kept for his 26 wife from 1865 to 1882, and he uses diaries and letters to present a different outlook of the estrangement between Nietzsche and Wagner. Westernhagen also has tried to establish early influences on the composer by examining composition exercises Wagner wrote in his teens and by reviewing the contents of Wagner's Dresden library. By the author's own admission, he has endeavored to refrain from being a moralist and instead concentrates on Wagner's art, “displaying the personality complete with inner contradictions, its creative polarity, and leaving the judgment to the reader.” How To Make Money in Music. The appendixes provide numerous examples of contracts and other legal forms and suggest additional sources of information. The publisher's address is 219 Park Avenue South, New York City 10003.
