<meta-value> video views The Living Voice. University of Michigan Vocal Health Center, distributed by Technology Management Office, UM Software, 3003 S. State St. Ste., 2071, Ann Arbor, MI 48109-1280; 734-936-0435; www.med.umich.edu/oto/vocalhealthcenter/ voice.htm. 17 min. 2000. $39.95. Choral teachers wishing to understand more about how the human voice works may find help in this video. Dr. Norman Hogikyan, director of the University of Michigan Vocal Health Center, and Freda Herseth, associate professor and coordinator of the voice department at the University of Michigan School of Music, break down the aspects of voice production. In their instruction, they emphasize the larynx. They describe the parts and functions of the larynx, and they give viewers a close-up view of their own larynxes doing various vocal tasks, from whispering to shouting to singing. Although the actual changes in vocal folds of the larynx are difficult to see, the descriptions that are offered allow a layperson without prior knowledge of anatomy to understand what is happening. Ensemble Techniques and Musicianship for Percussionists. Honey-Rock, 396 Raystown Road, Everett, PA 15537; 814-652-9184; fax, 814-652-6886; www.honeyrock.net. 80 min. 2001. Video only, $23.95; Video, book, and CD, $37.95. This video offers instruction and practice opportunities for percussionists. John R. Beck of the North Carolina School of the Arts provides background information on the history of the drum in the U.S., beginning with its use in battle during the Revolutionary War. The video emphasizes the snare drum, bass drum, and cymbal, but it also spends a little time on the suspended cymbal, mara-ca, tambourine, and triangle. Beck provides tips for playing the percus- sion parts on several standard grade 3-6 band pieces, including works by Sousa, Hoist, and Swearingen. After offering some instruction and demonstrating each piece, Beck conducts the piece with a recording of the winds only, allowing viewers to practice their skills using the music in the accompanying booklet. The winds-only portion of the music is also available on a practice CD. Renaissance Art and Music. Clearvue/eav, 6465 N. Avondale Ave., Chicago, IL, 60631; 800-253-2788; fax, 800-444-9855; wwwclearvue.com. 54 min. 2002. $95.00. Part of an eight-part series chronicling the history of Western art and music, this video is intended for junior and senior high students. It traces the development of art and music during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries and provides background information on life during this time. Much of the content is devoted to the visual arts, though Renaissance music is played through most of the film. The music discussion introduces composers Guilliame Dufay Gilles Binchois, John Dunstable, and Josquin des Prez and such musical concepts as cantus firmus, motet, and madrigal. The enclosed teacher's guide includes a transcript of the program, a glossary, a resource list, and three reproducible worksheets. Additional videos in the series cover art and music of the medieval, baroque, romantic, impressionist, and surrealist periods and the eighteenth and twentieth centuries. The entire series is available for $725.00. Don Giovanni: Leporello's Revenge. Bullfrog Films, PO Box 149, Oley PA 19547; 800-543-3764; fax, 610-370-1978; www.bullfrogfilms. com. 55 min. 2000. $250.00, purchase; $85.00, rental. This version of Mozart's opera tells the story of Don Giovanni from the point of view of his servant, Leporello, who presents a film of Giovanni's exploits to an audience of characters from the opera. Baritone Dmitri Horostovsky plays both Leporello and Giovanni. Though the opera has been significantly condensed, it retains Mozart's original music. This version may be difficult for students who are not familiar with the opera to follow, particularly as the lines between Leporello and his master and between past and present blur. For those who do know the story, however, it can serve as an interesting discussion starter about the character of both men and could be useful in an interdisciplinary project with English or theater classes. Conceived and directed by Barbara Willis Sweete, this film has appeared on PBS's Great Performances series under the title “Don Giovanni Unmasked.” It earned a Gold World Medal at The New York Festivals and a Bronze Plaque at the Columbus International Film Festival. Listen to the Silence: Rhythm in African Music. Filmakers Library, Inc., 124 E. 40th St., Ste. 901, New York, NY, 10016; 212-808-4980; fax, 212-808-4983; www.filmakers.com. 52 min. 2002. Purchase, $295.00; rental, $75.00. In this documentary, John Collins, an authority on the music of Ghana, takes viewers on a tour of the music of Africa. Master drummer Akakpol Afade demonstrates the complexity of African rhythms with a drum ensemble. Each drummer plays a different rhythm, and as they join together one at a time, viewers can hear how the music becomes more complex as new rhythms are added. Collins says that the cross rhythms that these groups produce are “the rhythmic equivalent of a melodic fugue.” Villagers begin learning these complex rhythms in childhood as they play rhythmic games. The video NOVEMBER 2003 69 includes footage of these games as well as of tribal music and dances. Collins also discusses how the tribal music and modern music came together in the Hi-Life music of urban settings and how village people adapted Hi-Life music so they could play it without modern instruments. Also discussed are the role of music in everyday life and the influence of African music on Western music. The Cliburn: Playing on the Edge. Van Cliburn Foundation, 2525 Ridgmar Boulevard, Ste. 307, Fort Worth, TX 76116; 817-738-6536; fax, 817-738-6534; wwwcliburn.org. VHS, 84 min.; DVD, 160 min. 2001. VHS $19.98; DVD, $29.98. This Peabody award-winning documentary offers an in-depth look at the joys and challenges of music performance by going behind the scenes of the Eleventh Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. Held every four years, the competition brings thirty young pianists from around the world to Forth Worth, Texas, to compete for cash prizes and concert management. The film follows the competitors through the process from the time they arrive in Fort Worth and meet their host families to the time the winners are announced. At the early stages of the competition, the film focuses on only a few of the performers, some of whom continue to the final stages, but all of the finalists get some time on camera as they prepare for the final round. Competitors share their feelings, jurors discuss what they are looking for in competitors, and James Conlon, who conducts the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra during the final round, shares his insights into the playing style of each finalist. The performance excerpts allow viewers to hear great pieces by Mozart, Stravinsky, Debussy, and others—titles of all pieces in the competition segments are shown on screen. The film offers a look at many facets of the competition, including the final preparations backstage, the moments of relief or exhilaration immediately after performing, and the discussions that go on in the jury room before the final decision is made.
