<meta-value> professional materials A bicentennial half-time show is being distributed by the American Revolution Bicentennial Administration. A package containing the full score and parts, seven formation diagrams, and a narrator's script can be obtained free of charge by writing to Steve Murphy, ARBA, 2401 E Street NW, Washington, D. C. 20276. Specify the arrangement needed—marching band or drum and bugle corps. “An Encyclopedia of the Violin”by Alberto Bachmann has been reprinted in paperback by Da Capo Press, Inc., 227 West 17th Street, New York City 10011. The volume traces the evolution of violin technique, examines the construction and manufacture of violins, lists designers in Europe and America, and provides biographies of the soloists who brought the instrument to its present prominence. The four-hundred-seventy-page book sells for $5.95. “Books on Music”is a twenty-seven-page listing of approximately one thousand four hundred titles available through Marlin Brinser, 643 Stuyve-sant Avenue, Irvington, New Jersey 07111. The company distributes imported books that are, in many instances, difficult to obtain, as well as a full range of books about music produced in the United States. Ives Tribute. Charles Ives and the American Band Tradition: A Centennial Tribute by Jonathan Elkus is the first venture into music of the American Art Pamphlet Series. Published by the University of Exeter, the thirty-two-page booklet shows the role and significance in Ives’ music of the American band tradition, and studies Ives’ approach to his art and certain aspects of his style. An introductory biographical sketch of the American composer is written by David Horn. Music examples are given, as well as a checklist of Ives’ works published for bands. The $2.50 pamphlet is available from The Registry, University of Exeter, Northcote House, The Queen's Drive, Exeter EX4 4QJ England. A directory of summer schools for teenagers, College Programs for High School Students—Summer 7975, is published by Directory Publishing Company, P. O. Box 326, Hillsdale, New Jersey 07642. The book lists some three hundred fifty programs to be held this summer on the campuses of two hundred fifty institutions. Music is one of over twenty topics in which programs are listed. Others are debate, oceanography, and radio-TV. The directory, priced at $10, describes the nature and scope of each program, listing dates, eligibility requirements, costs, and the sources of additional information. Educational Audio Visual, Inc., publishes a catalogue that describes the company's offerings in a variety of subjects on various grade levels. Eight pages list music recordings and accompanying filmstrips that might be useful to the classroom teacher. To obtain a copy, write to Educational Audio Visual, Inc., Pleasantville, New York 10570, on school stationary, specifying the subject area and level of interest. Out-of-print music recordings are still handled by some dealers. The following list of dealers who will handle requests for out-of-print recordings is supplied by the Library of Congress: Arnold's Archives, 1106 Eastwood SE, East Grand Rapids, Michigan 49506; S. A. Langkammerer, 3238 Stoddard, San Bernardino, California 92405; Jack's Record Center, P.O. Boeringer found the rare eighteenth-century copies of Stanley's works while doing research on the organ played by Stanley in London's Temple Church. The works include flute, violin, and oboe solos, with cello or keyboard accompaniment. Boeringer improvised a right-hand part for the music, as this was not provided in Stanley's time, but was left up to the instrumentalist's improvisa-tional talents. Boeringer followed the rules of theory that prevailed in Stanley's time for his improvisation. Technical comments and a biography of Stanley by his contemporaries are included in the two-volume set, which is available from the Concordia Publishing House, 3558 South Jefferson Avenue, St. Louis, Missouri 63118. ? Musicians often have ideas that work for themselves and no-one else. So I was very pleased when my reed design proved superior for thousands of musicians here and abroad. Music Minus One produces a series of fifty-three long-playine recordings designed specifically for contest soloists. Each recording provides a performance of the selection and a solo piano accompaniment of the work performed. A music book containing the omitted part and an annotated guide by the performing musician discussing his approach to the music are included with each LP. Three of the participating artists are Mason Jones, horn player; Armando Ghitalla, trumpeter; and Julius Baker, flutist. To obtain a listing of repertoires, grade levels, and performers, write to Music Minus One, 43 West 61st Street, New York City 10023. The music library system described in Organizing the Instrumental Music Library, by Albert LeBlanc, was developed over a five-year period of use in schools. After pilot testing, it was revised and condensed into a thirty-five-page soft-cover book. The procedures outlined are well organized and easy to understand, so student librarians could handle many of the tasks necessary to the maintenance of a music library. The contents of the book are organized in decimal-numbered entries (1.1, 1.2, and so on) under the main headings of Basics, Ordering and Preliminary Processing of Music, Score Order, Inventory of Parts, Consecutive Numbering, Classification of Music and the Card Catalogue, Folio Music and Special Considerations for Younger Groups, Ensemble and Solo Music, Check-Out System, Special Considerations for Marching Band Music, and Distribution and Recall Techniques. Organizing the Instrumental Music Library is published by the Instrumentalist Company, 1418 Lake Street, Evanston, Illinois 60204. The price of the publication is $3.50, or $2.80 each in orders of two or more. A list of anthems and organ music has been compiled by Augsburg Publishing House, 426 South 5th Street, Minneapolis, Minnesota 55415. A Guide to Music for the Church Year lists music published by seventy-two companies. Each entry contains notations as to difficulty, publisher, pertinence to scriptural lessons, and voice parts. The $4.95 volume is Augsburg's publication number 11-9195. A fifteen-lesson workbook, Improvisation Through Keyboard Harmony, by Sol Berkowitz, is designed to develop basic disciplines necessary for playing by ear. Each section introduces a new harmonic device and suggests possible ways of improvising melodies on top of it. The student is then encouraged to strike out on his own. There is a chapter on notation for jazz and pop music with improvisation exercises and a series of melodies to be harmonized. The soft-cover book can be purchased for $7.95 from Prentice-Hall, Inc., Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey 07632. </meta-value>
