Abstract

While André Hellé's beautiful drawings illustrating Debussy's score published by Durand in 1913 are famous, he remains little known. This multifaceted artist, who in addition to his paintings and drawings created toys for children and was also a decorator, collaborated not only with Debussy but with other composers as well. The three documents published in this paper also shed light on the circumstances of his meeting with Debussy and the story of the ballet ; they are preceded by an introduction surveying the artist's career and the history of the first performances of La Boîte à joujoux, which took place only after the composer's death.

            <abstract xml:lang="fr">Célèbre par les beaux dessins illustrant la partition de Debussy que publia Durand en 1913, André Hellé reste néanmoins peu connu. Cet artiste aux talents multiples, qui fut notamment peintre, dessinateur, créateur de jouets et décorateur, collabora non seulement avec Debussy, mais aussi avec d'autres compositeurs. Les trois documents publiés dans cet article éclairent les circonstances de la rencontre avec Debussy et l'argument du ballet ; ils sont précédés d'une introduction qui retrace la carrière de cet artiste ainsi que l'historique des premières représentations de La Boîte à joujoux, lesquelles n'eurent lieu qu'après la mort du compositeur.</abstract>
